La vie d’Isabel Ng-Lai est partagée entre ses études tertiaires, son engagement social et son implication dans la petite entreprise familiale engagée dans la fabrication de pop-corn.
Si vous la croisez dans une des rues de Port-Louis et qu’elle s’abstient de parler kreol ou n’utilise que certaines expressions précises, Isabel Ng-Lai pourra passer pour n’importe quelle jeune fille faisant partie du décor quotidien de la vie mauricienne.
Cependant, lorsqu’on est originaire du Canada, il est difficile de dissimuler sa véritable identité. Après 12 ans, Isabel revient au pays de son père François, ex-champion de natation, et de sa mère Françoise. « La langue créole me permet de m’entretenir facilement avec mes grands-parents que ce soit à Maurice ou au Canada. Je peux facilement tenir une conversation en kreol. »
Isabel fait partie de ces jeunes intellectuels qui ont la tête dans les études mais les pieds bien sur terre, dans les réalités de la vie. Avant d’entreprendre des études tertiaires en septembre prochain au Schulich School of Business, York University, Toronto, elle laisse derrière elle le parcours d’une jeune fille exemplaire qui est partie prenante de la vie en société dans toutes ses dimensions.
Pour être admis au Schulich School of Business, il faut être meilleur parmi les meilleurs. Les résultats doivent se situer dans la fourchette de 90 à 100 points. Isabel a fait mieux. Sa performance lors du concours d’admission lui a permis de décrocher une bourse de York University.
Ses performances académiques en général ont été impressionnantes. Entre 2007 et 2010, elle a conquis en trois occasions la médaille d’or dans le cadre d’une foire axée sur la science au Quebec High School. Pendant cinq années consécutives, elle a inscrit son nom sur le « Gold Honour Roll », qui requiert une moyenne de performance de 93 %. Elle est récipiendaire de l’édition 2012 de la Catholic Education Foundation of Ontario Catholic Student Award.
« J’ai un faible pour les gens de conditions modestes », dit-elle. C’est ce qui explique ses nombreux engagements dans plusieurs organisations. De 2010 à ce jour, elle œuvre au sein de plusieurs organisations à but caritatif. Ce sont, entre autres, l’OASIS leader, Free the Children, Toronto Youth Ambassadors, Angel Foundation, Mary Ward Day Care Centre, St. Patrick’s Street Patrol, ou encore St Michael’s soup kitchen.
Isabel Ng-Lai a également passé un séjour de deux semaines au Honduras dans le cadre d’un projet d’aide humanitaire. C’était en 2010. Grâce à une levée de fonds, elle a pu réunir 10 000 dollars. C’est cet argent qui lui a permis de séjourner en Inde en 2011 dans le cadre d’une mission humanitaire.
Depuis décembre, elle est active au sein d’un secteur chargé de sensibiliser les jeunes sur l’importance de l’engagement social. Elle effectue des recherches et des analyses. Elle entreprend également des travaux de traduction du français à l’anglais.
A la maison, elle travaille dans le commerce de son père. Elle est le partenaire au Kernels Popcorn située au cœur du Quebec City. Elle était l’Assistant manager de la boîte de juillet 2007 à août de l’année dernière. Elle ne reste pas derrière un bureau toute la journée. Tantôt, elle est impliquée dans la fabrication de pop-corn, tantôt elle se charge de la formation de recrues.
La maintenance, l’inventaire des produits en stock, les travaux de comptabilité, les transactions bancaires et l’établissement du programme de travail de la semaine et le calcul des salaires des employés font partie de ses responsabilités.

Au lieu d'aller sauver le monde, il y a un probleme flagrant a resoudre. Pourquoi doit-on passer beaucoup d;energie a former des recrues dans son commerce? Peut-etre qu'il y a un gros 'turnover' et que les employes ne restent pas lontemps a cause des conditions de travail?

You mentioned "concours dadmission", did things change since? I can't reckon that there was something like that. Though I agree that it's requirements to enter is indeed 90+ but it's also due to her huge involvement in Extracurricular because in the admission process they do ask you for what you accomplished in your student life and hers is fantastic making full use of the volunteering opportunities available in Canada.

Most of the Mauritians that you are so proud of have chosen to live overseas. They will probably never come back to serve Mauritius. They may only come for holidays.
So, it is better that you celebrate the local heroes who work so hard in difficult conditions to succeed in a country that is riven with sectarianism, favoritism, corruption, nepotism, parochialism and so on and so forth. For many people, tiny Mauritius is still a hellhole not a paradise as many self-serving politicians want you to believe.
So stop gloating about the successes of compatriots who have found better opportunities and openings overseas. The contribution of Mauritius in their successful ventures is very minimal. They soared by dint of their own talent, intelligence, industry and perseverance. Many a hurdle would have impeded their progress in the island e.g lack of political backing, marginalized ethnic grouping, discrimination of one kind or another, etc. Hence, let us celebrate the brave local heroes who have made a difference notwithstanding the odds they faced. I completely agree with Michel from Canada. I have worked in the public sector and I have experienced many politicians seem to be des 'conne-tout'. Prend le petit peuple comme bourrique. My father worked as truck driver. I come from modest conditions and I know the difficulties faced due to lack of support, now supposedly socio-cultural. This situation has ruined the social fabric of mauritius with its passe-droits, favoritism, communalism. I personally heard ministers speaking blatantly how to favour people of certain ethnic groups. Could dalle pou gagne vote. Where is ICAC at that time? They should be on the field not just behind their desks.

BRAVO!!!!I couldn't have said it better, more factual and to the point. I was pondering whether I should write or not on Saturday night when I saw the article but since I don't get published by Mr Proper or the moderators when I call a spade a spade , I didn't do it. A lot of the Mauritian successes abroad are not due the island but the sacrifices of the diaspora who decided to leave that hellhole ( nicely put) . Those who couldn't or can't leave ( apart from the elite) are just surviving and amongst them there are many heroes and heroines.

To say that Isabel was a sought after student would be the understatement of the year, they were fighting over her. It seems to me that all those supposedly Canadian residents have nothing better to do than write negative comments about this article, may be the writers feeling a bit jealous that they have not been chosen to feature in the article, may they feeling a bit jealous thay have not achieved as much as Isabel has achieved so far. For goodness sake, it is obvious to one and all that the girl is a high achiever and is doing Mauritius proud. How many of you can claim to have been offered a scholarship from such a prestigious business school. I bet you guys could not even manage to get into College Bhoujharry!!!!

First Congrats to Isabel for her achievements and wish her more success. For me after reading all these comments, i wont judge any of them, just no comments, as everyone has the right to think and write their own thought, but even what will these bring us so far. If we want to be successful we must try hard and feel self satisfactory. She must have been blessed with all these good values. Keep it up Isabel!!!!!
