En 1988, il reçoit le Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE). Le 12 mars 1995, le titre de Commander of the Order and Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (CSK) lui est octroyé.

There is a breed of men and women who are special and should receive recognition. Mr. Chan Lam was one of them. My interaction with him at the Ministry of Education reminds me of a man who was fair, respectful, compromising, fatherly, compassionate and dedicated to the cause of education. In the words of William Shakespeare: 'His life was gentle and the elements so mixed in him, that Nature might stand up and say to the whole world ,THIS WAS A MAN". May your soul rest in peace Mr. Chan Lam. My sincere condolences to his family.

Strange how we forget people for years, yet when we realise they are not here any more, all the memories come flashing back.
Well, I did not know Mr Chan Lam personally, but I recall seeing him every morning either standing at the gate of London College or in the veranda, always smiling, in a pensive mood and looking out for his students.I was a pupil at DAV College at the time and although I had no connection with Mr Chan Lam, I felt the aura that he radiated. This is great aspiration, which I am sure his pupils benefitted from and many have gone out to serve from the knowledge gained under his leadership.
Let us celebrate his life and keep the good memories alive for years to come.

I still can't believe that you left us....you were always there for me especially when I was little.....you never judged me, always encouraged me to try harder and supported me in everything I do.
