Mauritius gets its first cocoa fruit
The «food of the gods» has graced the Mauritian soil thanks to the hard work and perseverance of one man. Gerard Cangy, a crane operator by trade, is a passionate flora enthusiast, whose efforts in growing cocoa trees are finally being rewarded by a great output. Nine years ago, he came across the cocoa fruit and its trees, and it was only this February that the first fruit finally came out. We visited his garden in Montagne-Blanche in order to have a look.
Cocoa trees need high humid conditions and plenty of good nurturing care to grow. Gerard and his friends have now sown more seeds in a reserve at Sebastopol, and they aim to see 100 % Mauritian chocolate in the markets in the near future.
