Our party leaders: What do they mean?

«La population doit se mettre au vert» – Navinchandra Ramgoolam. Did he mean green US dollar notes? Not many of us are fortunate enough to hold ‘coffres-forts’ at home, stacked with green notes. Cotomili vert ? Non. Piment vert ? Non, trop cher. Rs 300 le kilo !

Or, was he revisiting an old advert on Brylcreem, for hairstyling (those growing up in the eighties will remember: «Passer au vert, Brylcreem»)? Hard to imagine. I doubt he was referring to Green Label. He prefers Blue! (so do I, being a Chelsea FC fan!). Whatever ‘Green’ he was referring to, it certainly gives us the ‘vert…ige’ trying to follow this man.

«Pas zis lor terin, dan politik osi mo ena landirans» – Pravind Jugnauth. «Mo ankor fit» – Navin Ramgoolam. Papao ! The ageing Lion and the not-so-young Lapin are asserting their youthfulness, vigour and virility. Shame, the Jeux des Îles are over. That would have been two more gold medals to add to the already impressive tally!

What’s the secret, Navin? Well, those with a good memory will remember the contents of the coffre-forts. There were not only green notes but some rejuvenating, performance- boosting green plants as well! As for Pravind, Lakwizinn must be dishing out some healthy food to maintain his «landirans»! Green vegetables for Iron Man. And carrots for the leader of the Orange party.

«Nous réfutons le terme ‘dynastie’» – Paul Bérenger. Are you just as confused as I am, readers? Joanna Bérenger, is she not Paul’s daughter? Li pa tifi so papa ? Danny Perrier, is she not Paul’s sister-in-law? Frédéric Curé – li pa Paul so zann sa ?

So, when Chacha Ramgoolam’s son takes over as leader of Labour Party, then it is called dynasty politics. When Sir Anerood Jugnauth passes the baton to his son Pravind, he perpetuates the Jugnauth dynasty. But when Paul Bérenger surrounds himself with members of his family at the MMM party hierarchy (daughter, son-in-law, sister-in-law), the word dynasty takes a different meaning. They are where they are because of merit and were democratically elected, says Mr Bérenger. Another «couleuvre » for MMM followers to swallow. With compliments from camarade Paul.

That’s it for this week, folks. Hope you have enjoyed the papal visit. I go and check what’s the latest Boris Johnson has said about Brexit!

(Editor’s note: Ramgoolam and Jugnauth dynasties have led to party leaderships. Not quite Bérenger’s situation yet.)
