Where do we stand as to the interest of youth in politics and citizenship engagement?

Today, we can notice the sad truth that many youngsters in Mauritius are neither interested in politics nor in what is going on in the society. Firstly, being interested in politics does not mean to be involved with a specific political party, to go on the streets holding protests or to stand as candidate for the election. But the point is to be politically aware of the ongoing development in our society and the functioning of our state.

I always ask people to question themselves on everything happening around them... Why is this issue occurring? What are the solutions? How must they be executed? Who will bring the solutions and actions? Are we concerned, although we might not be interested in politics?

Often, when I express the sentiment of being interested in politics, people tend to be sceptical. I will rather say that, since we live in a democratic state it is our responsibility to know everything happening in the society and react positively. Everything happening in all sectors is obviously related to politics and our daily lives. Therefore, it makes no sense not to be interested. Unfortunately, in Mauritius, scandals with many politicians are worsening this situation. As a result, we get many youngsters who do not know how to raise their voices or are afraid to do so because they are not empowered enough.

“Criticism on social media can be seen everywhere on most posts of young people. But does it have a positive result at the end of the day? Unfortunately, no.”

The big issue nowadays is that we can hear only criticism from many young people and see no action at all. Criticism on social media can be seen everywhere on most posts of young people. But does it have a positive result at the end of the day? Unfortunately, no.

It is high time that the young generation of Mauritius is inculcated the value of Mauritianism. It is important to know about all issues happening in the society, about all factors governing the state and most importantly, knowing who to put to govern our state.

“Criticism on social media can be seen everywhere on most posts of young people. But does it have a positive result at the end of the day? Unfortunately, no.”

I believe that it is very important that every parent inculcates in their children that value for loving one’s country since their birth. Patriotic programmes along with the history of Mauritius should be often organised in schools and colleges. Knowing the history and hard work of our ancestors for Mauritius is important in building fraternity among Mauritians. This is according to me real patriotism for Mauritius.

Our elders fought a lot to get us the right to vote and decide on who to put to govern the country. Therefore, we should definitely reflect upon that. Just turning up to vote on election day is not being patriotic. However, we must do our best to upgrade our society, prevent wrongdoings from happening towards citizens of Mauritius by making our voices being heard and take serious actions.

Can you imagine if all young people started reflecting on important issues concerning Mauritius? I believe that it will certainly make a positive difference for the well-being of the country.

Therefore, citizenship engagement is of great importance in Mauritius. Each one of us must develop the single goal of making Mauritius better and developing it into a better society.

Also, the idea of democracy must be given proper value. The mindset needs to be changed and citizens need to be more engaged in the society. Our system of living, the economy of the country, education or health do not depend only on politicians, but on every Mauritian.

Everything starts by a matter of reflection over every single problem happening around the island. EVERY SINGLE PROBLEM IS YOUR CONCERN!

A good knowledge of all sectors of the state and an awareness of the rule of law apply to social and human relationships. This relates to citizenship engagement. It is therefore important that every young person has a common interest to participate in making the Mauritian society a better one.

Nowadays, we can hear talks about vision and development for the coming years by politicians. What is that vision? Does it mean development in the economic sector, infrastructure, education or health? I would rather say, that vision should be developed, considered and set up by us, youngsters.

What is your vision for the future? How would you like to see your country in the coming years? By reflecting on these, we can realise that citizenship engagement is of utmost importance. The foundation of a better future lies within the youth.

I’m neither for any political party nor for any politicians. I only want to help bring a good change in our society to make sure our state is functioning well and there is more of citizenship engagement.

Every person must be able to bring a good change in the society. Being interested in politics and being engaged in the society will educate every Mauritian on each aspect of the state. This will result in helping to fight against any social crisis.

I request all young people to start reflecting on those matters which is certainly important for the future of Mauritius. Being interested in politics and having more citizens being socially engaged will improve the quality of life in the Mauritian society by working towards the common vision. This will impact positively in decision-making by the authorities and will result into a better future for Mauritius.

Therefore, all young people need to engage socially and help each other be good citizens.

Long live Mauritius !
