Building Resilience and Excellence for national empowerment

“When the wind blows hard on a tree, the roots stretch and grow stronger. Let us not be weaklings, yielding to every wind that blows but strong in spirit to resist.”

Amy Carmichael

As the second Economic Miracle that Mauritius is seeking, and the endeavour of the Prime Minister and his team for a “relance économique”, I view that our motto should be building resilience and excellence for national empowerment. It is a matter to be in touch with what will be and to put all our focus towards the future.

Premises to tune a miracle mindset

In truth, we should not rely on what is and what has been. As examples: China which hasbeen heaven for many countries, where now there is a slowdown. Recently we have seen the downturn of the mining industry in Australia. As such, I wish to reinforce as follows:

We need to establish a framework for “Lessons learnt” for what has gone in Mauritius and worldwide for successes and failures, to record and to assimilate these in meaningful terms.

As such, we say that every good thing does not last forever. What was once the big thing and the differential factor now becomes the ordinary thing, and common to all. We need to continuously re-invent ourselves to maintain the momentum of the “miracle mindset”.

As has been pointed out, we cannot rely on the past, as we are in a different environment, and therefore we need a new and applicable mindset better suited for the future. To transcend our unique blend of cultural heritage as a Mauritian Brand to the world, this should include our contextual knowledge acumen at all levels as a necessity and a way of life. The Japanese used to say “We take the best from the world and make it our own”.

Indeed, what goes up may come down as a reality of life cycle. This should induce our capability to forecast the future and estimate the timing of a “Turnaround Strategy” and to provoke our best strategy to rebound back in the best possible way.

We need to assert our readiness with the global world with its “Highs” and “Lows”, its opportunities, threats, and its conflicts. Our endeavour for research is an ongoing exercise into the prospects of how to position ourselves at the front end of the race at all times.

Our long-term endeavour is to build our resilience capability against adversity in order to take the next step promptly as to the volatility of our environment. For example, a cyclone may destroy the environment. Then we must be able to cope with the damage and rebuild.

The quantitative aspect of seeing our economy is important as a measurable yardstick to follow up and to monitor progress. But we need not undermine the quality aspect in context with our socialpolitical obligations.

Paradigm shift

Overall, it is to “connect with the reality of the global world” for a holistic and an integrated approach. We need to inbuild negative aspects and “potential dangers” in our model of the future. We can incorporate scenario possibilities and contingency planning to the best optimal fit. We could build a best and a worse scenario to rationalise our best estimate to be more realistic and sustainable. To adjust continuously against our initial estimate but in aligning our future targets.

More importantly is our resilience in dealing with adversity, to consolidate our prospects and build excellence in our creativity from the uniqueness of our Mauritian cultural heritage and our environment to embellish our positioning in this world. Foremost, we are citizens of the world.

There is a need for a paradigm shift to gear us towards the miracle we aspire to. Truly, with any philosophical endeavour, we invest in our faith, confidence and our best intention. The key is to drive our positiveness towards the outcome in what we really wish to achieve.

Concluding remarks

A socio-economic miracle does not happen by setting obstacles or bringing our inabilities to the open. It is in the manner that we set our mind to conquer ourselves, liberate the possibilities of transforming the impossible targets into reality.

The Mauritian socio-economic miracle sets the essence of our cultural heritage, our environment, our size and our positioning to leverage our best mix in order to transcend the uniqueness of the Mauritian brand above the rest. Indeed, there is only one way forward – the wining spirit. “We have to take risks. We will only understand the miracle of life when we allow the unexpected to happen.” To quote Paulo Coelho.
