Eleven Bangladeshi workers die in a car crash

Eleven Bangladeshi workers die to –day Wednesday 12 January, when a truck and the bus on which they were travelling crashed. The road accident occurred around 7h50, this morning at Saint Julien d’Hotman, a remote village in the eastern part of Mauritius.

The circumstances of the accident are yet to be determined. The two vehicles collided and the bus was seriously damaged. The driver, a Mauritian, and 10 Bangladeshis died on the spot. Four others were injured.

Fourteen Bangladeshi s workers were on their way to their work place at Prada textile factory in Saint-Julien d’Hotman. They were among the cohort of employees who just joined the company a fortnight ago.

Honourable Shakeel Mohamed, the minister of Labour and Industrial relations, together with his colleague Honourable Arvin Boolell , minister for Foreign affairs, are having discussions with the relevant authorities to plan repatriation of those who passed away for funerals in Bangla Desh.

Mr. Yusuf Mohamed, honorary consul, for Bangla Desh, in a statement broacast on local radio station, Radio One declared that he was in contact with the Bangladeshi officials. He also pointed out that he would be asking for compensation to be paid to the family of those who died in the accident.
