Ramgoolam: Desmond Tutu, the father our Truth and Justice Commission

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor" - Desmond Tutu

It was God’s design that at the crucial time of the dismantling of the racist apartheid regime in South Africa, there should be two men living there at the time, who would play a vital role in preventing a blood bath- They were called Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.

I had the great privilege of meeting Archbishop Desmond Tutu many times and he came to Mauritius on my invitation. I turned to him to advise us on the setting up of a Truth and Justice commission as he did a similar one in South Africa ; It was him who suggested that Mr Alex Boraine be appointed as the chairperson.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu was a real man of God, who never feared to speak truth to power, as many do, yet he showed limitless compassion and tolerance to others, and remained a peacemaker throughout his life, reaching out to everybody.

The world has lost a shining star of hope and humanity but his spirit will live on. My heartfelt condolences go the Tutu family in their hour of grief.

May his soul rest in the eternal peace that he so richly deserves.
