Robert Mugabe has been sacked as leader of the Zanu-PF.

President Robert Mugabe is barely clinging to power as he was sacked today, Sunday 19 November, as the leader of the ruling party, Zanu-PF. Mugabe’s position has become untenable over the last few days when the military took over the country in what they claimed to be a “bloodless transition”.

With his party turning on him, Mugabe, who is the currently the world’s oldest leader at 93 and has been at the head of Zimbabwe for 37 years, will find it hard to stay in power. After being suspended last week, parliament is set to resume by Tuesday to decide on the fate of Mugabe and whether to impeach him.

Emmerson Mnangagwa, the former vice-president of Zimbabwe having been sacked only two weeks ago, is now the new leader of the ruling party. The move has been called to put a stop to the rise of Grace Mugabe, the current president’s wife, towards the top position in Zimbabwe.

With the army claiming that it has no desire to stay in power and run the country, Mnangagwa is now the favourite to take over the presidency of Zimbabwe. The parliamentary session this week could confirm that tendency as Mugabe still seeks a dignified exit.
