Eight people killed in New York attack

An attack in Manhattan, New York on Tuesday 31 October, has left eight people dead and approximately a dozen injured. Sayfullo Saipov, believed to be the perpetrator of the attack, drove a rental truck into a cycle lane. He was shot in the abdomen by the police but is expected to survive.

Saipov is originally from Uzbekistan but he has been living in the US since 2010. He lived in New Jersey and his latest job was as an Uber driver, as confirmed by the cab company itself. According to various unconfirmed reports, there was a note in the truck allegedly demonstrating that Saipov had pledged allegiance to the terrorist organisation ISIS.

Among the eight victims were one Belgian woman whose name has not been revealed yet and five Argentinians – Hernán Diego Mendoza, Diego Enrique Angelini, Alejandro Damián Pagnucco, Ariel Erlij and Hernán Ferruchi – who were in New York to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their high school graduation. The identities of the two remaining victims have still not been made public.

Andrew Cuomo, governor of New York, argued during a press conference that it is looks likely that the attack was carried out by a ‘lone wolf’ and that there was no reason to believe that any further attacks would follow. President Donald Trump reacted via Twitter to express his condolences and stated that he ordered Homeland Security to strengthen their vetting process.
