Hopehagen REALISTIC and eye catching – these two words aptly summarized the Mauritius Prime minister intervention at the United Nations this September 2009. This was, indeed, no ordinary week. No ordinary week at no ordinary time. What’s more, by week’s end, prime minister and president Obama and other world leaders were standing shoulder to shoulder not in preparation for war – as their predecessors had – but in an effort to avoid one. Obama’s support for what is called « a growth strategy » – and what others call a policy of ‘ borrow and spend’. Yet for Mauritius Prime Minister this is a political boost on the forthcoming general election. For the common man what catches most is this time, Obama has declared his belief in the United Nations; in working with other nations and not alone; and in negotiation not military action. A new approach to peace and to war is now under test. The outcome cannot be predicted. At the national level – What though does all this tell us? It reveals how keen Labour strategists would love to play the Obama and PM card during what has been talked upon during the conference. They constantly linked the two men for having sharing the right views during the economic crisis. We may sense that the prime minister in real political limelight for technology and free speech gave the platform for broadest coverage of the event. Prime minister speech was in essence, a passionate plea for the rights of smaller nations. He is a small player in a big world. It will remain a Glorious Leader’s performance. Banker The PM can talk about the Chagos hundreds times in international stage but unfortunately the Western media almost completely ignore the issue. Did anyone ever read about the human tragedy of Chagos in NY Times, Newsweek, and CNN. Just ask any western tourist here what they know about the issue. There is more than 99% probability that they know nothing. |
