Jugnauthson or Jugnauthadnezzar

No (bemused LOL)! I won’t be talking about the son of Sir Anerood. We have to deal with a much more crucial issue than a question of power legacy. Well, still, it’s about legacy of power but far from the petty and trivial disputes about whose son is going to get on the hot seat. It’s about a little nation, claiming to be bold enough to challenge the most influential country in terms of diplomacy, economy and army and its ally, the fifth richest country of the world. It’s about the guts of the father to go as far as he pretends he wishes to against the United States and Kingdom.  Will he go as far as Iceland – what an irony! It’s written ‘ìsland’ in Icelandic – did in the Euro 2016 round of 16 stunner where 11 heroes namely Halldarsson, Saevarsson, Arnason, Sigurdsson, Skulason, Gudmudsson, Gunnarson, G. Sigurdsson, Bjarnason, Sigthorsson, and Bodvarsson caused the greatest upset in recent football history and perhaps even in history itself, by transforming those called the “three lions” into three kittens? Will he, failing to have a stadium to his name and the effigy of his wife on a bank note, be nicknamed “Jugnauthson the 12th Icelandic”? Can he be a hero?

The States and the Kingdom United are, in what SAJ called a “hostile and unacceptable” communiqué, threatening to cause “lasting damage to our relationships” because Mauritius wants to seek a consultative advice from the International Court of Justice about the Mauritian sovereignty on the Chagos. That’s the diplomatic way of saying it. If we refrain from smoothing things over and calling a spade a spade, the situation is as follows: UK and US have been taking us for idiots for 50 years; they have been lying, designing Machiavellian plans like inventing an insulting marine reserve around the Chagos, and have, in all impunity been deliberately ignoring the 2066 resolution of the United Nations adopted back in 1965 where all the countries of the world called on United Kingdom not to “dismember the Territory of Mauritius and violate its territorial integrity” while “noting with deep concern” as their intention was to “detach certain islands from the Territory of Mauritius for the purpose of establishing a military base”.

Tonight SAJ will share drinks, tasty snacks and jokes with the US Chargé d’Affaires in Floreal

Now it’s time for punishment. It’s time to take them to court, and it’s time to get our islands back. That’s the impression SAJ wants to give to Mauritian citizens while in fact he’s blowing hot and cold. He’s doing nothing more or less than that: blowing hot and cold. Tonight, he will attend the party for the US National Day celebrated on July 4th. He’ll share drinks, tasty snacks and jokes with the US Chargé d’Affaires in Floreal. But we’re ok with that, aren’t we? Just as we were ok when in 1990, Sir Satcam Boolell and Sir Aneerood Jugnauth, respectively minister of foreign affairs and prime minister just aborted the motion they were about to file against UK at the 45th Session of the UN General Assembly. Weakness, cowardice, blackmail, call it by whatever name, but Sir Satcam Boolell later himself conceded that at that time they had to “choose between the Chagos and the future of the textile industry”.

In ancient times, Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon had a dream. He dreamed there was a shining, perfect and mighty statue of himself made of gold, silver and bronze. But it was destroyed by a little insignificant pebble which, while it innocently started hurtling down the mountain, gained in momentum and size before violently smashing the statue at the level of its clay feet. The remains of the statue were too tiny to see with a naked eye. That’s what actually happened. His dream was actually a prophecy of the downfall of the mighty kingdom of Babylon. How beautiful! UK and US the giant and SAJ the pebble!

But that’s not done yet. For SAJ, it’s now either or. Either he’s that stone or he could actually himself be the feet of clay, a boasting giant with nothing inside. Either he’s Jugnauthson the Icelandic or Jugnauthadnezzar the Babylonian.
