Aux premières élections régionales de Rodrigues, en septembre 2002, les Rodriguais démontrèrent qu’ils méritaient largement l’autonomisation qui leur avait été dévolue.
Et qu’était révolue la condescendance de candidats parachutés de Maurice, avec leurs lots de cadeaux, souvent alcoolisés.
Le 29 septembre 2002, Soopramanien Sooprayen, enseignant installé dans l’île depuis les années 1960, se fit élire en compagnie de son camarade de l’Organisation du peuple de Rodrigues, André Lélio Roussety.
Les électeurs de Port-Mathurin en choisissant leurs deux élus se souvinrent seulement que Sooprayen avait milité pour une culture identitaire rodriguaise dès son arrivée comme enseignant dans l’île, de Maurice.
Ces électeurs avaient dû aussi se rappeler qu’il avait créé un parti politique, le Parti du peuple rodriguais. Mais contre la toute puissance de la machinerie démagogique du PMSD en 1967, il dut s’avouer vaincu.
Jusqu’à l’arrivée de l’OPR.
Ce petit retour dans le passé permet de mieux comprendre, selon ce que relatent les journalistes ayant couvert la récente campagne électorale à Rodrigues, l’agacement de Serge Clair, à un moment donné, concernant les attaques contre l’un des candidats de son parti à Port-Mathurin.
Un énervement qui n’était pas dû aux bouteilles de rhum généreusement offertes aux électeurs pour contrer l’OPR, ni à la démonstration de force pour intimider l’adversaire ou à la distribution de bagaz : tout cela relevant de méthodes importées de Maurice avec ce qu’elles renferment de mépris pour l’électorat.
Non. Ce qui irritait le leader de l’OPR, c’était une campagne sournoise contre le candidat Ismaël Vallymamode.
Une campagne xénophobe et communale menée manifestement par des esprits pervertis par une trop grande proximité avec les grosses formations politiques à Maurice.
Une campagne finalement imbécile étant donné que la famille du candidat OPR est installée dans l’île depuis des générations.
Et les électeurs de la région 5 n’ont pas fléchi devant l’ignoble : comme ils avaient élu Sooprayen en 2002, la majorité d’entre eux ont accordé leurs suffrages à Vallymamode lui permettant de sortir en tête de liste.
Rhum, bagaz, baz, violence, communalisme d’un côté…
De l’autre, des électeurs qui optent, selon leur conscience, pour le représentant de la formation à laquelle ils font confiance, peu importe son origine…
Finalement, Rodrigues aurait davantage à nous donner qu’à recevoir de nous, notamment en ce qui concerne le fameux Way of life…

However I recall reading in some Official papers that in 1967 Rodrigues voted almost 98% against Independence and that in January 1968, one Guy Ollivry turned up in London, apparently on a mission on behalf of Gaetan Duval and insisted on seeing the Colonial Secretary of state. I believe he managed against all protocol to see a Minister of State. He requested that Rodrigues be excised from Mauritius just before we accede to Independence. He was, in very typical British Colonial manner, sent home packing!! It was also reported that a Coup by the Opposition Party ( PMSD) was not a totally unlikely scenario. I also read that on the 12th March 1968, Rodriguans refused to hoist the new Mauritian Quadricolore but instead were all out in the streets waving the French Tricolore!
