Touria PRAYAG  |  28/10/2011

Mr. Mohamed, is there a whiff of elections in the air?

No. My personal opinion as an observer and knowing my friend Navin Ramgoolam, the present prime minister (PM), I don’t think the opposition can expect him to advise the president to dissolve parliament and announce early elections.

I don’t think anybody expects the PM to advise the president but the opposition is saying that they could get some Members of Parliament (MPs) to leave the Labour Party (LP,) resign as a block and then call for early elections.

Well that’s pure wishful thinking! I don’t see anybody with any interest in leaving the Labour Party at this juncture. As far as I know, the members of Labour are all faithful to the prime minister and to the party.

• Well it’s good that you think so but I don’t know if the prime minister himself believes it.

As an observer I don’t know what the PM believes.

• But why did he postpone his trip to Australia, then?

You would have to go and ask him that.

• What is your reading?

Personally from what I know and I know quite a few people from the LP, I don’t see anyone willing to betray the  PM. My personal opinion is that at the moment you have one minister out of the country - Dr. Kassenally is going on pilgrimage and Arvin Boolell is also leaving for a conference. Therefore, he wants to be in Mauritius to look after the affairs of the country. It’s not about people wanting to betray and leave the party.

Nothing like that. This is again pure speculation on the part of those who wish to demean the PM and the LP and want elections.

• Talking about elections, there’s speculation about Anerood Jugnauth returning to politics…

Well, this is a free country and we believe in total democracy. Mr. Jugnauth is free to come back and so is any other previous minister or president for that matter. However, although this is not spelt out in any laws, I think it’s a breach of ethics. I mean you are enjoying all the benefi ts of your presidency and now you want to come and present yourself as a potential prime minister. This is unheard of in any country that is not a banana republic.

• You said it’s a free country so what’s stopping him from coming back?

I think it’s against all ethics. It is totally against propriety. He is enjoying all these advantages such as the State House, a free car, escort and whatnot.

• Maybe he will choose to relinquish all those privileges.

If he does that, that’s another matter. But if you are still president, you cannot demean that office by coming down because your son and his party are in danger of disappearing. And he is using the Réduit as a base to
do politics!

• People seem to want him to come back to ‘save the country’. Who has asked him to save the country?

Save his own son perhaps. Even then, he will not be able to save him.

Par:-london
Why interview this man? He said Navin wants to be in Mauritius to look into the affairs of the country. Bull shit ! Where was Navin when 6 MSM ministers left ?
Par:-viji
i said that once before ,and i will say again pravind and the president are yesterdays men.
Par:-Private eye
I think Mr Mohamed is not qualified to comment on this matter given that his own case of dynastic politics with his son as minister.

As readers, we are fed up of the Mohamed family weekly interviews in the various publications. To Mr Mohamed : at this age, it is worth showing more wisdom and less hate -as taught by your religion.
Par:-Kader Nahaboo - Berks U K
The chap talks a lot without saying anything, really.
Par:-Pritish
Who is Yousouf Mohamed infront of SAJ? Its like an elephant and a mosquito ! this is absurb ...Shakeel Mohamed himself said during the PTR-MSM alliance in 2010 that it was SAJ who trained him to become a politician..now he is insulting him..and now Yousouf's turn...this is ridiculous......whatever Mr Mohamed says , People love SAJ ..they appreciate him as a legend in Mauritius....tomorrow when he will pass away people will still cherish his memories same as SSR , Sir Duval and Sir Boolell. Who will remember Yousouf Mohammed ? .. Sir Anerood Jugnauth and his MSM has only 4% of electorate but how much does Mohamed has ???
Par:-bignoz
Is it ethical to be the lawyer of Harry against Air Mauritius and at the same time being the lawyer standing for Air Mauritius in some other cases? Was it ethical to stand as lawyer for Air Mauritius against employees in disciplinary committees when own son is the Minister of labour? Was it also ethical when we know that some of these suspended employees had filed complaints before the ministry of labour against Air Mauritius?
Par:-Socrates
M Mohamed talking about ethics? What a big joke? (...). It is a pity that Miss Touria Prayag allowed him to talk about others but did dare question him personally? What one says is only worthy when the person in question passes the test of CREDIBILTY himself. May be next time you can put him more on the hot spot, Touria!
Par:-Patriote
Who is that guy ?
Par:-Raj
Fools Rush In Where Angels Fear To Tread! Touria, I really appreciate your professional integrity and courage in calling a spade a spade, contrary to the 'langue de bois' that many in your profession affectionate. However, I am quiet disappointed that after ruling over the headlines of Le Defi & Radio Plus so often, it is L'Express that is now allowing Mr Mohamed to occupy its headlines. This is another instance of illusion of freedom of expression through freedom of the Press, i.e. when the same people are systematically monopolizing all societal debates. Can't the Press and the journalists beat that closed trap of status quo and vested privileges that the likes of Mr Mohamed represent and allow other ordinary citizens ( certainly more awakened) to participate on debates concerning societal issues? What is so peculiar and refreshing that Mr Mohamed is revealing to us in his interviews at his advanced age? If the majority of the ordinary citizens look resigned and apathetic , it is largely because of this false matrix that the media knowing but helplessly allow the business and perverted political community to construct and impose upon us. It is misleading and a cliché to honour Mr Mohamed with the superlative of ‘eminent political observer’. How do we reach this conclusion? He is just a shrewd man who has the opportunistic knack of playing always in favour of the team in power , especially when he is part of the few who enjoy the privileges that political power confers to your political and business interests . Otherwise, such guys just go cold turkey when they are out of the political power circle. They are born with a ‘golden spoon’ that they keep transmitting as family heritage from generation to generation. They are cut off from the reality of the masses. They just prey on the latter for mere political power. (...)
Par:-Ashwin
Advocate Yusuf Mohamed, you are a man of talent and intelligence..... i really love your short, sweet and straight to the point answers.
Par:-Aslam
why do lexpress weekly choose to give 'has been' like yousouf mohamed coverage. Who cares about what he has to say. Prend to retraite do matelot!
Par:-Bond 007
The only benefit SAJ would be possibly getting even if he resigns and becomes PM will be the President's Pension currently standing at Rs 144, 000 (they all get that, Uteem , Offman, Vice Presidents get 2/3 of Rs 175 000, etc...), but I don't see SAJ wanting the other perks like First class tickets, duty-free in addition to official cars every 3 years . What I mean to say, Sir Anerood can easily give those things up during his tenure as PM as he will be getting the PM's privileges! C pa un probleme sa. I find it funny that the journalist being unaware that you cannot call a Knight by his name referred to the President as Anerood Jugnauth in this article, yet Mohamed went further, he showed his disdain or perhaps envy, by calling him MISTER Jugnauth! How would he like that we called his father Mr Razack Mohamed bearing in mind that the latter was just a Knight (KT) while SAJ and SSR are Knights Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG)! lol Or should we also omit to write the Senior Counsel next to Mr Mohamed! And does he categorise France as a republique bananiere as President Valery Giscard d'Estaing did run and was elected as an MP after being President, or the early days of the US when former Presidents were appointed Chief Justice?
Par:-abdullah
Well, Mr Yousouf may not be aware of a famous case - Mr Vladimir Putin in Russia. According to him, it is unheard of, because he enjoys watching MBC with Navin and Shakeel beating the drum
Par:-James
Jugnauth pas ena lamour propre. What else does he want? enjoyed reduit, free cars, benefits Have you heard of the Queen of UK returning to politics to become PM. Shocking & disgraceful.
Bachoo : The One and Only who knows who will win the next elections.
Par:-jincy D'Olo
We are done and dusted with the OLD politicians and specifically with their SONS, and regetards of ex members.. to name a few. Mohamed Ramgoolam,Boolell.,Jugnuth, Duval,Ringadoo,..just quit and give us a break and the republik will be a better place
Par:-raf
Maitre ou done ou l'opinion li ok.Mais kan ou dir "And he is using the Reduit as a base to do politics! " La c'est une accusation gratuite.Est-ce ki perna poursuite ladan? Nous coner Maitre Yousouf se sent plus a l'aise en cour plus que n'importe ou.Mais Dr Zouberr fer moins accusation ki sa.La police ramasse li.Mo pa pran part person, mais prouve sa ki ou dir. sinon dimoune pou penser ki ,kitfois ou p envie demenager.
Par:-Monk
Yusuf Mohamed has himself disappeared 9from the political scene). He is a 'has-been' who triy to come to surface by making shocking statements from time to time. He should take a well deserved retirement.
Par:-Cannonball
He wants not only to save his son but also a whole empire , the tentacles are deeply enrooted in the economy . Who knows the internal affairs of Suntrust ? Who are involved ? What will happen if the operations of the turst are put infront of public eyes ?Trust is a group of companies that join forces to form a cartel or in some cases a monopoly. In any event, there should be enforced what is called trustbusting and break the trust as such from it's operations. The Govt must comeup with an anti trust law and we will see whether the MMM will support this or continue to support MSM ,after century scandal medpoint, just for the sake of getting into the driving seat . It's all about money .The ambitions are not for helping the country or developing it but simply to amass tons and tons of money and this nurutres the immoral behaviours and the emergence of the "moralites pas remplis ventres "culture. All the methods are good provided that there is money to reap,
Par:-MBCTV
Like the C.A.M?
Par:-Saif-
Yousouf Mohamed and his boy belong to another age, I mean they are the most objective when it comes to their own self-interest. As Soodhun rightly said Yousouf Mohammed is willing to be calife a la place du calife. But what would we be doing with Beebeejaun?
Par:-foolmee
not recommended politicians as president or vice president. there are other ways to reward them - as if they haven't rewarded themselves enough at our expense. on the other hand, maybe saj has not forgotten the 'treatment' he got by the reds after 2005 elections.
