Ceux qui font de la résistance sur la question de l’accès aux archives sur les immigrants indiens, disponibles au Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI), reprochent aux médias d’avoir donné en spectacle toute cette affaire. Le sempiternel discours sur la nécessité de respecter les sensibilités des uns et des autres refait également surface. Prendre les médias comme bouc émissaire dans ce cas est un peu facile. Mais, il est encore plus facile de porter en bandoulière tous ses tabous. Si des Mauriciens ont pris le parti de ne pas connaître la vérité sur eux mêmes, ils n’ont, par contre, pas le droit d’étouffer les vérités historiques. Et c’est bien de l’Histoire dont il est question.
Une saisie rationnelle de l’histoire est ce qui permet de comprendre le fonctionnement d’une société. Est-ce cela qu’on veut cacher ? Il le semblerait bien. Car, on veut bien préserver le vieil ordre. Raison pour laquelle, dans un entretien qu’il nous avait accordé l’année dernière, Pavitranand Ramhota, chercheur et anthropologue au MGI, co-auteur avec Suzanne Chazan-Gillig, chercheuse française, de L’hindouisme mauricien dans la mondialisation, plaidait pour un «New Deal». Que peut-on comprendre par là ? Il s’agit, entre autres, d’accompagner l’histoire pour saisir ce qui fait notre présent.
Cependant, il semblerait qu’on ait choisi de vivre ce présent avec nos insignes mensonges. Notre identité trouble de Mauriciens continue à poser problème. Car il y a cette crainte, puérile, que nos identités religieuses et ethniques ne s’effacent devant une identité citoyenne où tous les Mauriciens seraient égaux. Au fond, il y a cette propension à se croire supérieur et à croire que le pays appartient prioritairement à son groupe.
Nous avons ainsi fi ni par développer des défenses pour préserver nos fantasmes. Pourquoi parler de religion, donc ! Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam n’avait-il pas dit qu’il ne faut pas toucher à la religion et aux langues ! Depuis, nous sommes dans le mode de la censure de tout discours qui pourrait faire voler en éclats nos mythes. Nul besoin d’un
«New Deal» ! Nos préjugés nous suffisent. Croire ce que l’on n’est pas permet mieux d’avancer vers sa vérité. C’est une logique bien mauricienne.
C’est ce qui explique le fait qu’ils sont nombreux à s’improviser historiens. Surtout du côté de l’Hôtel du gouvernement. Il y a une version officielle de l’histoire qui satisfait un certain nombre de citoyens. Mais, il y a aussi une autre catégorie de Mauriciens qui souhaiteraient connaître la vérité sur eux-mêmes afin de pouvoir régler leur rapport avec leur imaginaire.
Il s’agit, aujourd’hui, de ne pas faire de nos enfants des individus incultes. Déjà qu’on a embrouillé leurs esprits en leur faisant croire que la culture se résumait à la religion…

Here Mauritius and 43 years after Independence, Casteiste prevail, Communalist protect and privilege but one finger of the hindou Community who has a Claim to significance and all LAND AND RESOURCES is claimed by the State for the welfare of it's Own Community in the most subtle deceitful systematic operation. Today Australia is a great and prosperous nation where many of our close relatives have emigrated.
It is a fact that among the first women to come from France there were not only nuns. It is a fact that Christianity was whipped and fire-branded into many African slaves. It is a fact that the great-grandfathers of some Hindus is different from what they claimed. It is also a fact that the ancestors of many Muslims were at some point in time (long before immigrating to Mauritius) Hindus before they converted to Islam. It is a fact that many people from China gave a Christian name to their kids and adopted some Christian practices to be well seen by the then colonial authorities.
All the above are facts whether the MGI wants to give access to the archives or not, whether spin-historians want to write bogus articles or not…
No. I’ll not spit on my ancestors were they thieves, prostitutes, simpletons. No, I’ll not take any pride if my ancestors were kings, artists or saints.
What’s important is what we do shun evil and encourage righteousness, what we do to become better human beings and to improve the lot of those around us…..whatever might be the cocktail of white and red blood cells running in our veins.

Alors, arretons de s'attarder sur les symptomes et de vilipender le citoyen "ordinaire". Diagnostiquons plutot les maladies et tirez sur les imposteurs si vous voulez . Proposons des solutions, non simplistes mais qui puisent dans la complexite du monde et qui se construisent dans le dialogue et le temps.
