Navin Ramgoolam’s speech, at Quay C yesterday, included the harshest statements ever made by a Mauritian head of government against leading British political figures. He described as «liars and hypocrites» some prominent members of the UK Labour party, in power till last May. He did not even spare British Ex-Prime Minister Gordon Brown, lashing out against the latter’s empty words and false promises.

Ramgoolam’s sharp burst of anger was triggered by the fact that the establishment of a Marine Protected Area (MPA) in the territorial waters of the Chagos Archipelago came into force this week. The MPA is a marine reserve the UK government has created around the Chagos Islands except for the largest of them, Diego Garcia.

The decision to go ahead was taken though the Mauritian government had made it clear during consultations held with British authorities that there can be no legitimacy to the project without the issue of sovereignty and resettlement being addressed. The Chagossians have also strongly opposed the project claiming that it would in effect bar them from ever returning to their native islands.

They say the marine protection zone would stop them fishing, their main livelihood.

The British Government pretends its only interest in establishing the MPA is to preserve the natural environment of the Chagos and to restore depleted fish stocks by 2015.

Many believe that this ecological perspective is not the real driving force behind the MPA. The UK initiative looks rather like a ploy to corner Mauritius and to prevent Chagossians from returning to their islands. Indeed, the British move is suspicious because of its timing. This marine reserve is being created whilst proceedings are due to start before the European Court of Human Rights where the îlois are challenging Britain’s decision to deny them the right to return.

Mauritius feels it has been stabbed in the back. Understandably, Ramgoolam’s offensive words were mainly directed at former UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband. The latter is a liar, a deceitful man who lacks honesty, says the PM. Ramgoolam went to the extent of admitting that he rejoiced over David Miliband’s failed attempts to conquer Labour Party leadership.

Miliband did promise that the Foreign Office would “work closely with all interested stakeholders’’. He was not only unable to honour his words but he did not speak the truth when he publicly stated that Mauritius gave its agreement to the MPA project. Ramgoolam is adamant about it : this is a lie.

The PM added that Gordon Brown once gave him the assurance that the project would be placed “on hold”. He was trapped. Yet, it is usually Ramgoolam who wins the make-believe games.

I believe that the PM’s burst of anger against the British is quite belated or fake. What’s the point of lambasting David Miliband, former Foreign Secretary, when he is no longer in power. The local Labour Party, which has always bragged about its privileged relations with the British Labour Party, never engaged in serious discussions with the Labour government of Tony Blair or Gordon Brown about the future status of the Chagos archipelago. From the time SSR became PM until now, the local Labour Party has not supported the sovereignty claim of Mauritius over the Chagos with the full range of political, diplomatic and legal battles that was required to bolster the Mauritian case. If the MMM and private citizen groups like Olivier Bancourt’s movement had not kept the issue alive through a systematic campaign about Mauritius’ lawful rights over the Chagos, people would have forgotten about the lost islands. Even when the leader of the MMM was contemplating an official lawsuit against Great Britain for having illegally excised the Chagos from Mauritius, the Labour Party did not support him. The MMM”s move might have sounded candid but it was bold. Actually, the British government was so spooked then that they passed legislation in the House of Commons to prevent ex-colonies from suing Great Britian in the International Court of Justice. The present PM, who was then leader of the Opposition, poured scorn on the MMM’s proposal. With that kind of division among local political leaders over a national issue, did we expect the British leaders to pay attention to our claim? Well the country is now paying a heavy price (the irretrievable loss of the Chagos) for the local Labour’s stupid partisanship and wishy-washy approach to national issues.

Après la mort la tisane! Quand tous les Chagossiens ont été expulsés, c'est maintenant que le gouvernement réclame leurs droits.

PM should know better before making the diplomatic situation worse. The UK does not support Mauritius as it used to do, no more courses for the civil service, police and SMF. Training which is very important for us. But talking about Hypocrites, will Navin return the Money his Father SSR took and profitted from the British for the removal of the people of Chagos???

It is about time we make the international community aware of the venal behaviour of the British over this issue.Hypocrites they are absolutely, not in general but in this context. The last Bristish Labour government was the supposed Champions of human rights.Upholding the rights of despicable criminals. What about the human rights of the Chagossians?.This case is among the worst example of human rights violation we have ever witnessed.Whether we played a part in their present plight is irrelevant. It's the British and their masters, the Yanks, who holds all the aces.
