Qu’a dit Choonee dimanche dernier ?

Rapidement devenu secrétaire général du PTr, il sera intronisé «Grand Officer of the order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean» en 2008 ?

Why is Choonee being excoriated for his faux pas? Is it because he let his guard down and brought this political subintelligitur out in the open? Shall we first acquiesce that all politicians do suffer from a touch a logorrhoea? Mauritian politics are rife with casteism and I would like to defy anybody who can prove this to be untrue. While the world around us achieves bigger things, our small nation stand shilly- shally on the brink of religious ridicule. Character assassination has become fashionable in Mauritius. Fresh, opinionated minds are quick to rush pell-mell in all journalistic directions when a political figure slips up. Choonee’s gaffe is not a first of its kind. My fellow bloggers mentioned Virahsawmy, Koonjoo and Bundhoo among other ‘racists’ who had dared voice out what most think and know anyway. Ad hominem attacks will lead nowhere. Casteism is so deeply ingrained in our society. We cannot expect the politicians to fix this. The redress must begin within the individual mind. The geriatric masse is not one that will change their views overnight or adopt competence over caste. Seasoned players of the political arena capitalize on this very immovable way of thinking. The last gust to sweep across the island during the penultimate polling day is that of ‘hum aur hamare’ speeches, shrouded by ‘tempos’ whistling away promises of a better life post- elections. The political history of our island reflects this unfortunate reality. From the gubernatorial days, casteism and favouritism helped define the very core the independent Mauritius. Growing up in a politically- active family, I recall conversations about how independence itself was bargained for, who was involved in which decisions and how the cake was distributed, to put it in layman’s terms. And let me tell you who have barely had a licking of icing, let alone a slice- The Mauritian nation. The ‘chosen few’ sycophants would collect the votes, using every dirty tactic in the book. This is followed by nugatory improvements in the life of Mauritians and massive rewards for those at the top. My dearest bloggers and fellow Mauritians, this old time hidden agenda simply happens to rear its ugly head every now and then. Those astute enough to suss it out helplessly accept that there is not much one can do about it. Politicians are here to cadge our votes, cajole us to buy into their promises, employ callous methods of convincing the nation that they will, this time, deliver results. Later, voters lament having to choose between tweedledum and tweedledee, when we all know that the power rests in our hands that cast our hard- earned vote. Dear Mauritians, what good is casteism to us as a nation? This social stratification, shallowly characterized by wealth, hereditary status, inherited rank, is purely divisive. We, as individuals and die- hard patriots, must be able to bring our island to the top of our priorities. By shedding casteism and refusing to fall for this cheap political trick, we Mauritians must promote an esprit du corps and national bonding. Politicians are mere members of a much bigger picture. WE are the building blocks of this nation, my dear compatriots. We are proponents of grass- root democracy, not plutocracy or national supremacy. My heart heavy with nostalgia of being a Mauritian and finding it hard to rhapsodize about the love I have for my nation, I leave you with the words (with the correct translation!) that, 31 years on, still send shivers down my spine. Mera karma tu (You are my Duty) Mera dharma tu (You are my Faith) Tera sab kuch mein, mera sab kuch tu (I am all yours, just as you are all mine) Hum jiyenge aur marenge eh watan tere liye (I will live and die for you, O Motherland!) Dil diya hain, jaan bhi deinge, eh watan tere liye (My heart already belongs to you I will lay my life for you)

Divide and rule system will definitely harm our harmony.

I hate the bashing of the Minister. Once again your paper failed to clarify and instead you want the head of Choonee based on what he said. Your paper concocts a lot ..on one side you have Nr Mohammed and Callikan and one side you have Chonee. "YOUR PAPER IS BECOMMING CHEAPER AND CHEAPER OVER TIME" VISIT YOUR OWN HISTORY AND YOU WILL SEE YOUR WORTH INSTEAD OF PLAYING WITH THE PECADILLE.MERCI

The PM should ask Minister Choonee to step down. During the last elections, he played so much on his image as the guardian of national unity. So how can someone who holds national unity at heart tolerate such a racist in his team of ministers? If he is serious about what he preaches, he should revoke Minister Choonee. Otherwise he will just be one of those "do what I say, not what I do" people.

To Ahmad Rafick: Do you really think that making remarks about the face of Ramgoolam is equivalent to the repeated mention of ethnicity coming from several members of Ramgoolam's alliance with the clear implication that some ethnic groups in Mauritius have precedence on others? You have clearly missed the point of the editorial which refers to the theme developed by Ramgoolam et consorts dating back to the elections of 2000. The Choonee episode is not an isolated incident, but only one of several instances of clearly racist allusions from the PTr directed at their opponents. And mind you that all Mauritians do not think like Choonee, many Mauritians do care about national unity, there is ample proof of that in the Mauritian society. You must have been generalizing your own line of thought by calling people hypocrites.

Navin Ramgoolam the PM, is a learned man, wealthy, successful and very ambitious, such attributes must have generated some animosity from the media and supporters of the opposition, enough to form a team of Ramgophobia to see his downfall. During the election campaign he not only had to carry the can for the clangers of the likes of the Choonee's but also to bear the journalistic comments. I wonder why there were no comments about the columnist who depicted Paul Berenger as "someone of the oppressive minority" who later having spotted the cockup amended the text to the[]FORMERLY] oppressive minority, but too late the original had been copied!.

Somebody said it right... Ask those so called heads of our religion the meaning of 'Om bhur bhuva swaha tat savitur varenyam, bhargo devasya dhimahi, dhyoyo naha pracho dayaat....' and none of them would answer correctly. I feel ashamed how could those people support what the 'Ministerless creature' has said at D'Epinay. I fail to understand how could those people sitting there could applaud what that 'dangerous creature' has said. I am taken aback also by the silence of the mass on this issue. Such 'creatures' should be banned from our country. But I realise if we banned these beasts from gnawing our Mauritius, very few of the current bunch of politicians would remain.

In this day and age , Mr Choonee still believes in discrimination among the children of God ! What a shame! The Vedas , the Upanishads, the Bhagavat Gita never mentioned castes , these sacred texts are in circulation to unite the different ethnicities/ races. The manusmriti is a deformation of the laws of Manu, who were once a great ruler, philosopher and lawyer. More than 5000 yrs ago, Manu implemented a system of division of labour called ' varna' and this system became corrupt through history by invasions and colonisations. This system is so crap that anyone with a human brain will not endorse it. Mr Choonee, let me remind you some of the legends of Sanatan Dharma where Lord Shiva's younger son Kartikeya or Muruga married a low caste dalit girl from south india and her name was Valli also known as Valli Devi. The reasoning behind this legend is God does not discriminate between low caste and high caste. Concerning Lord Siddhartha Gauthama Buddha, although he was born a chettra also known as Khastriya, yet he had his last meal with a poor dhalit family where he ate pork and contracted dysentery! Contact me and i'll teach you, law , philosophy and Sanatana Dharma....My family are tamil brahmin Iyengars and who can stop me marrying a Pallar girl??? We are children of God, Mr Choonee ! Think Mauritian first !

Cheers! Un blue label comme d'habitude

I would put this down to political naivety. If the PM sacks Mr Choonee , then for consistency and fairness all other Ministers should face the same fate and we should head for a new general election. If the police were to take actions for ''incitations a la haine raciale'' , then our jails won't be big enough to contain all the culprits. The opposition is no better. The same political tune is played by the opposition. Remember the famous victory of Dev Virahsawmy in the by - election in Triolet in the 70's. What happened afterwards? Instead of capitalising on that strength , the rules and practices were distorted and we are today back to square one. A little piece of advice , if I may , to Minister Choonee , do not say these things in public as they are not ' morally and politically acceptable' . Say them in private like everybody else and that is ' morally and politically acceptable'. Tuesday 31 August 2010 Dublin

Navin, although belonging to the same discourse, is smart enough to dissociate himself from Choonee's position. However, if Navin is serious enough and dare more he should revoke Choonee as his Minister and even encourage him to resign from his MP position. Mauritius needs to lead by example but not only by rhetorics. (appadu@hotmail.com)

You like it or not, every body thinks and behaves the same way,as minister Choonee has done. All those who have commented cannot pretend to be more mauritian than Choonee. They are free to express themselves and show their hypocrite mentality. All commentators have mentioned or expressed their opinion about what Choonee,Ramgoolam,Virasawmy,Lormesh Bundhoo said. What about other politicians of other ethnic groups have said.No mention about that? What about "Figure Ramgoolam comment Fesse" I have not seen any body writing an editorial on that. No body from Canada has said anything. Don't ridiculize yourself. Don't pretend you are better mauritian than others. Plus hypocrite que ça tu meurs.

Mr Choonee is a joke! To give him a ministerial job and on top of that minister of culture! That's even a bigger joke! What does he know about culture/ arts? He might have gone to school but 'culture, sa li pas fine apprane'! May be he knows that's the only way to keep him in power- to use his caste as a tool ! What a shame and not a bit of decency! That's the type of politicians we get in this wonderful MRU. C'est ene plaisir extraordinaire!

oui.

Who is shocked by such a vile language coming from a politician? Really no one.But as long as the person holding such"discour" is of the same feather than us, there is no problem,NOU banne ça.....But when it comes from someone from a different colour, culture, it's a big deal.Let's not bury our heads in the sand, most if not all of us cherish some communal spirit in our blood. It will be a while when we all think as a Mauritian. But as soon as the population wants to be one, a politician de basse classe of the like of Choonee, will remind us of our origin.en passant Gregoire is of the same communal pedigree, let's be fair, but its not limited to Choonee and Gregoire unfortunately.Ask Many Mauritians who have migrated to Canada or Australia why? they have migrated , and the answer I allow you to guess, for fear of censorship. As Navin put it ,there will be floods of water under the bridge until we move as one .

when I returned to Mauritius after my studies, I went to see a minister in the then MSM govt who happened to be a christian. I was shocked when he asked me to which caste I belong. I was really not aware. I told him that I will have to ask my father. All politicians without exception swim in the racist ocean. So condemning Choonee for what he has said is not enough. Those very people who are accusing Choonee also practise racism in some form or the other. We really need to reingeneer our thinking, all of us to be able to think as mauritians.

For me, during the last elections, the very sentence "Sa election la c'est 1 choix entre moi ek Berenger comme Premier Ministre..." was more racist in nature than what Minister Choonee said. Okay he does not say it, but when the MBC plays all those movies about "white" domination in India, I think we all know what is being implied here. And I totally agree-this is not the first time someone has used such language in Mauritian politics. SSR himself used to do it. I guess that's the way it has always been... and that's the way it seems it will be.
