The fact that l'Express and other newspapers can criticise the Prime Minister and the other Ministers of the current government is a clear indication that the press is still free in Mauritius. But is l'Express really independent? Has it's independence not been impaired given the past political relationship of its Chief Executive Officer? I strongly condemn the Minister of Finance for refusing to invite the journalists of l'Express to a press conference. This could tantamount to a violation of the constitutional right of the press. The Minister has been ill-advised. However, the cancellation of orders and the decision not to place advertisements in l'Express hardly constitute a threat to the freedom of the press ad it is debatable whether the constitutional right of 'Express has been violated. These decisions do not , in any way , prevent l'Express from fulfilling its role freely. In fact , it would be very interesting to wait and see what the court's verdict will be on this one. What is lacking , in my humble opinion , is a little bit of maturity on both sides. 31 May 2010 Dublin , Ireland

They are strangling the free press to make it sing their song. Don't be surprised if Lexpress is bankrupted through loaded courts or its people jailed on trumped up charges. This, dear friends, is the warlordism of gangsters in expensive suits standing over the people under the guise of democracy. Our opinion will soon be designed and delivered to us exclusively by bought and paid-for media. I suppose i could have been more neutral to appear moderate but gangsterism is gangsterism. FILS A PAPA in the Mauritian context must surely mean when the leadership of a party is transferred from father to son,NO QUESTION ASKED. Try and contest this automatic transfer of leadership and you are out.Like in the MSM.Other examples so far relate to the Labour party and the PMSD.However when a daughter or son joins the party of her/his dad and climbs the ladder like any other member of that party,it cannot be described glibly as 'FILS A PAPA'politics.Like Tony Benn and his son in the UK,or Rajiv Gandhi and son,in India.Dr PHILLIPE FORGET HAS DENOUNCED THE FALSE PROPAGANDA OF RAMGOOLAM,WITH REGARDS TO THE FOUNDATION OF L'EXPRESS NEWSPAPER. The boycott of Fox News host Glenn Beck gathered more steam Monday when retailing giant Wal-Mart and seven other companies pulled their ads from his show, organizers said. Among those bailing on Beck: GMAC Financial Services, Best Buy, CVS and Travelocity. On July 28, Beck called President Obama a racist who has a "deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture." That prompted a call for a boycott by Color of Change, an African-American online political organization that claims 600,000 members. About 145,000 members signed a petition asking Beck's advertisers to stop supporting him. "It's rare for a campaign directed at a TV show's advertisers to be this successful," said Color of Change founder James Rucker. "But we won't stop here. We're going to continue reaching out to Beck's remaining advertisers." A total of 20 companies have pulled their ads in the last two weeks, Color of Change says, including Geico, ConAgra, RadioShack, Men's Wearhouse, State Farm, Sargento and Procter & Gamble. Judging from Monday night's broadcast, there were plenty of companies eager to fill the ad slots, including The Wall Street Journal, DirecTV, Honda and Oprah Winfrey's Oxygen Channel. Hundreds of Beck fans have voiced support for him on a counterprotest Web site, DefendGlenn.com, which urges consumers to boycott the advertisers who pulled out of Beck's show. A Fox News spokeswoman said Tuesday: "The advertisers referenced have all moved their spots from Beck to other programs on the network so there has been no revenue lost." Mr JCL, you confused a lot of your readers with your blatant contradictions, which is becoming a perennial feature of your editorials. De quel Ramgoolam parlez vous? I picked up the same point raised by Moral Scientist. Is it the "Navin Ramgoolam n’a pas cessé, pendant des mois, de me demander mon avis sur un grand nombre de sujets. Je n’ai jamais refusé d’apporter ma contribution à l’avancement de mon pays. Quand sollicité, j’ai prodigué mes conseils à Ramgoolam, à Jugnauth, à Bérenger ». which you had described as “d’apporter ma contribution à l’avancement de mon pays ». Again I quote you « Il y a environ 6 mois, le PM m’a appelé, on se voyait régulièrement pour parler de son projet d’alliance avec le MMM qu’il souhaitait tant. Il m’a demandé d’aider à la négociation.” As for the dangers to democracy and/or to Free Expression, the case is closed and dusted with the interview of Mr Michael Atchia in your own paper. He concluded that the Free press in Mauritius is ALIVE AND KICKING. I wrote a long rejoinder on Free Mauritius debunking you arguments, but why have not you publish it, if you are such a defender of the free Expression? You remind me of my Primary school days. Daily school yard affairs, in the morning we started playing together, by noon, we are the worst enemy in the world, not on speaking terms, after school we are walking home together side by side. All because of some CHEAP MARBLES. I wonder Mr JCL, whether you too, have lost YOUR MARBLES as well.

The public press under an AUTOCRACY is necessarily a true agency of propaganda. But under a FREE DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT it must be the very reverse. Propaganda seeks to present a part of the facts, to mould the way of thinking, to distort their relations, and to force conclusions which could not be drawn from a complete and candid survey of all the facts. It has been observed that propaganda seeks to close the mind, while freedom of information and education seek to open it. This has become one of the dangers of the present Government...Shame

Dr. Forget rightly says that L'Express and the other newstitles of La Sentinelle group are free -"libre". Free to publish whatever does not transgress legal provisions for the respect of people's reputations, privacy, and undue influence on sensitive matters. Free also to assume the consequences of their illegal or unethical or even myopic decisions. L'Express and the other news-publication titles within La Sentinelle group were given all the headroom to stand tall: it was their choice to use it to reach for the stars or to hang themselves. They chose, inspite of excellent advice given to them, to put their heads through a noose. We issued several warnings to them as they were going astray, in the same way that we issued, and are still issuing, warnings to Kevin Rudd in Australia that he must correct his course. The final decision, the final outcome, and the assumption of responsibilty for the final outcome, lie solely on the shoulders of those who have been given the headroom to stand tall. As the noose where they have freely inserted their heads tighten, we objective, and partial, observers alike watch. It seems to me that the noose has tightened overnight. The lesson holds true for ALL other publications: Le Defi, Mauritius Times, Le Matinal, Le Mauricien, Weekend, or whatever. After all, we remember the faction (combination of fact and fiction) titled "L'Honneur Perdue de Katrina Blum". About the cartoons of L'Express.mu, of Zapiro in the Mail and Guardain of South Africa, in Facebook's "draw Mohammad day", one should also keep in mind the operette of Loris Varney "La Fille de Paillasse". I could spell out more eloquent reasons to pause for thought, but what I have said above should be enough to get people of good will to reflect on their responsibilty.

REPLY TO JCDL PART 1-There are barefaced contradictions between what JCL says and what he does. One minute Navin Ramgoolam is offering him the post of President and begging him to facilitate an MMM-PTr Alliance, the next minute the same Ramgoolam is allegedly trying to suffocate a leading newspaper headed by the same JDL. There is something very fishy here. The stand-off between JDL and Ramgoolam has nothing to do with free Expression or a free press. In my book, it is a pure commercial decision. Just as journalists, Editors and the ordinary folks have the right to criticise politicians (in a civic manner), in or out of Government including PMs, so should politicians and PMs have the right to criticise Journalists again in a civic manner.. This happen all the time. (You would be surprised to learn of the fates of many journalists who fall out with Little Emperor Sarkozy III. If a certain lady journalist writing a column every Sunday from St Georges Street is still alive and kicking, then that should be emphatic evidence that we have a Free Press. We must also make a distinction between a Free Press and an Independent Press. L’Express, especially through the actions of its chief Executive Mr JDL, has, for quite a while relinquish its independence, as was stated by Joneed JeerooburKhan in another newspaper! Mr JDL squarely refused to answer my questions, namely how secret meetings and negotiations to appoint him as President serves democracy and is compatible with his “obligations journalistiques”. Furthermore, contrary to the cardinal mission of journalists, that is inform and expose, ( le dicton : PRINT AND BE DAMNED), Mr JDL still refuse to INFORM THE PUBLIC what DEMAND S SAJ ALLEGEDLY MADE TO NAVIN TO RESIGN TO MAKE WAY FOR JDL. (...). Monsieur JDL , I stand ready to show the state of our press in Mauritius in a non-partisan manner as long as you do not issue an editorial fatwa against me. I eagerly await the green light!! A Bon Entendeurs! The indefatigable PLOUM PLOUM.

Silencing public critics The government has declared an open season on independent journalists who express their opinion on public policy issues. Its witch-hunters and spin-doctors are out to muzzle and criminalize the editorialists of the free press for daring to criticize the government. Far from being partisan or personal in their comments, those editorialists have always made a sound critique of government’s policy based on some philosophical rationale. They have not indulged in smear or malicious slander against our rulers nor have they published false news about them. All they are doing is making fair comment on matters of public policy, which is a basic right of the free press and one of the cornerstones of parliamentary democracy. So why is the government so hell-bent on silencing the free press? The financial boycott of one media group through the denial of government publicity to its newspapers and the cancellation of ministry subscriptions is not an isolated incident. It is part of a pattern of undemocratic actions that the present regime has taken over the last five years to silence all critics of public policy. From the arrest of trade-unionists to the arbitrary treatment meted out to hunger strikers fighting for their rights, from the constraints imposed on academic freedom at our tertiary institutions to the sacking of competent public sector managers (Jeetun at the SIT, Gayan at the MGI and Jugmohun at the MRA) for unjustified reasons, there is a systematic attempt to sideline all those who can make a positive contribution to policy debate. When we connect the dots, what we see unfolding in front of us is a campaign to control public opinion that smacks of totalitarianism. However, rather than taking the draconian measure of shutting down outright the newspapers being blamed for making unfair criticism, the government has been pursuing a policy of incremental repression against the free press. There is a slow but steady effort to push those newspapers to the brink of collapse by way of financial strangulation. Since there is nobody to hold them to account for the financial boycott of L’Express, our political masters think they can get away with murder. It is very strange that our human rights watchdogs such as Democracy Watch, Amnesty Mauritius and Transparency International have not condemned strongly the government ill-advised measures against press freedom. If independent journalists under attack are left to fend for themselves, civil society as a whole has abdicated its right to defend democracy. Until the Supreme Court gives its ruling on the motion disputing the advertising boycott of one major daily newspaper, it is clear that people’s access to official information in the paper of their choice has been impaired. On-going attacks against L’Express took a cynical twist during the electoral campaign when the parties in power lambasted the so-called Bérenger-De l’Estrac collusion, with its obvious racist overtones, in order to reap political dividends. The objective then was to polarize the elections along ethnic lines and push the opposition into a ghetto. Since the outgoing government came back to power, we had cherished the hope that its leaders would be magnanimous in their victory and try to heal the wounds. But that was misreading their mindset. The government is leveraging its stronger majority to act more ferociously against intellectuals who think differently lest they would influence public opinion. Our political masters want to create a nation devoid of critical minds, but full of yes-men, sycophants, boot-lickers, turncoats and nincompoops.

I've always wondered why racism is never denounced. It is even thought improper, not politically correct, to say that a handful of white people own and control over 75% of the wealth of the country. The racist belief that only the whites can develop the country is never denounced or condemned while it is politically correct to say that communalism is responsible for all evils affecting us. What is communalism? Feeling different? Feeling superior? A feeling that one should preserve one's culture? A combination of all these? If it is bad to consider oneself superior, is it bad to feel different, to want to preserve one's ethnic culture and identity? Is anti-communalism a genuine concern for nation building or just a diversion tactic so that racism is ignored and an anti-Hindu propaganda is subtly and cleverly distilled? Navin Ramgoolam is systematically attacked because he is a Hindu and a Vaish by the Euro-Creole controlled press which turns a blind eye on Bérenger's communalist, casteist and vaishist political tactic. Is it in the name of 'Morisianism'? Has Navin Ramgoolam won over Bérenger simply because he is a Hindu and a Vaish or is it also because he is a good, charismatic leader with a clear vision and a progressive strategy for the future? The same could be said of Sir Seewoosagur or Sir Anerood. Ashock Jugnauth, Madun Dalloo or Dinesh Ramjuttun are all three Hindus and Vaish. Who in their right minds would choose them to govern the Republic of Mauritius?

I was just amazed that at 12.40 there was absolutely no comment on the major issue from someone who was involved in the making of one of the most important daily newspapers on this country. Yes, Dr Forget, I agree 100% with you. Politicians do not measure the harm that they are doing to themselves by their inconsiderate acts. I don't know what's in Navin's or Pravind's head. If they think they can turn Le Matinal into a L'Express, they are just dreaming. L'Express is an Institution nowadays, and I mean what I am saying. You cannot kill such an institution using public funds. You will be accountable one day or the other. If I have one suggestion to make, Dr Forget, becasue you are our seniors. Why can't La Sentinelle get public and issue a limited number of shares to the public such that its readers become shareholders. This can be extended to the staff of La Sentinelle where their extra bonus can be converted into shares. Then we will see what all the Navins and Pravinds will do?

Ramgoolamism is able to sustain itself because it gives the illusiion to the broad masses that it is fully aligned with Gandhism (the philosophy of the Mahatma Gandhi). Only an illusion, not the truth. The truth is that Mahatma Gandhi (just like Emmanuel Anquetil) had to go to jail several times in order to wrestle power away from the British in 1947. SSR sat in an armchair, collaborated with the British and was given several titles. When the British changed their policy in the 1960s by deciding to willingly part away with their colonies, they handed over Mauritus to SSR on a golden platter. It is only the poor Chagossians who paid the price by losing all their possessions.

Voila donc LA version. Merci.
