The bittersweet anniversary
So now, as its 20th anniversary got celebrated this month, it is worth getting back to the facts behind the fall of the Berlin wall. The key role in creating the climate which led to the dramatic climax of the cold war was played by the much-derided peace movement. The marchers, the banner-wavers, and the women of Greenham, who are still often pilloried as Moscow's patsies and agents of influence, did more to open the wall than the western governments of the time. The huge street demonstrations which grew in number in East Germany against communist party rule throughout the autumn of 1989 had their origins in the country's peace movement. They were centered on the Protestant churches which had courageously developed a common programme for peace and human rights for a number of years before the rest of East German society threw off the mantle of fear, turning a movement of a few hundreds into one of hundreds of thousands. It was pressure from the peace movement which changed the superpowers' international agenda and managed to launch a peace race, even before Gorbachev came to power. At their first meeting in 1985, Gorbachev and Reagan issued a statement parrotting the peace movement: "A nuclear war cannot be won and should never be fought.". East not sold on values of the west- Despite reunification the Germans remain to a striking extent two distinct peoples. And nowhere is that clearer than in the overlapping worlds of retailing and advertising. The eastern mineral water company branding slogan is: "Lichtenauer mineral water - so beautifully normal." . Lichtenauer mineral water is sold exclusively in eastern Germany. The agency behind its latest campaign, Fritzsch & Makat, has built up a sizeable business, with a turnover last year of DM5m (£1.7m) by producing advertisements that appeal to the still-differing sensibilities of eastern Germans. Ten years after the merging of the two Germanies, Fritzsch & Makat's co-founder, 30-year-old Alexander Makat, sees no reason to abandon his firm's guiding premise, that Der Ossie tickt anders, which roughly translates as "the easterner marches to another beat". Everybody is trying to be politically correct and skate over the differences. "But when you do that you undermine people, because you play down the things that give them their personality and confidence. You see that easterners and westerners both spend, say, 10% of their disposable income on beer. But then you find that the easterner buys only eastern beer and the westerner only western beer. In the east, the ranking is Audi, then BMW and then - at a considerable remove - Mercedes Benz. This is because the image of Mercedes Benz is imbued with the old notion that it is a car for big capitalists. In formerly communist east Germany, wealth and success are not seen as the unmitigated blessings they are taken to be by most in the old federal republic. The dominant eastern ethos as "Prussian-puritan". Its values include order, discipline and modesty. This could explain a phenomenon for which there is no universally accepted explanation. Advertising for western products devised by western agencies can provoke suspicion - or worse - in the east. Easterners rarely play golf, in western advertising a running a television commercial that showed a woman executive who had gone back to work in late middle age. Her husband and children were failing miserably to cope at home. Three ways in which the advertisement upset easterners. It seemed to be telling liberated eastern women that there was something wrong about going back to work. At the same time, it seemed to be saying to a part of the country in which work is scarce that you can drop into employment whenever you like. It tried to sell the product by reference to a lifestyle rather than on its intrinsic merits, and the inhabitants of formerly communist states are notoriously resistant to that kind of subliminal message. "German unity is still incomplete," Merkel told ARD public television, noting how east Germany still lagged behind the west in economic growth, with joblessness nearly twice as high."We must tackle this problem if we want to achieve equal quality of life."The chancellor gave her warning before the main ceremonies at the historic Brandenburg Gate with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, presidents Nicolas Sarkozy of France and Dmitry Medvedev of Russia and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Our history did not end the night the Wall came down. To expand freedom to more people, we cannot accept that freedom does not belong to all people. We cannot allow oppression defined and justified by religion or tribe to replace that of (communist) ideology. The Wall "was swept away by the greatest force of all -- the unbreakable spirit of men and women who dared to dream in the darkness. An overwhelming majority of Germans are still grateful for the Wall's fall, according to a poll in the Leipziger Volkszeitung daily, with 79 percent of those surveyed calling November 9, 1989 a joyous day. But sociologist Frithjof Hager of Berlin's Free University said national unification, sealed in 1990, was still a work in progress. That a stark reminder for us all in Mauritius that for all the pledge to build a national Mauritius, the authoritarian mindset is still an issue. On various issues the own Mauritian Wall stands and we are torn apart, split. In contemporary Mauritius- Parliamentary Questions, like the one from elected representative Mr. Guimbeau on who pays and who avoid tax met with nebulous and opacity, and unclear reply. The Social alliance that got elected on a wave of optimism, now finds governing an increasingly pessimistic country while trying to revive a struggling economy. We as a nation has mammoth domino pieces marking the path- where Wall still stand and reminisced about life in the barrier's shadow. Leaving with remark of Germany chancellor- freedom is not self evident," Merkel said. "Freedom must be fought for. Freedom must be defended time and again."
| | | eric | | | Nazim, your article is very depressing and to exacerbate matters you've mentioned George W Bush..The Berlin Wall is nothing compared to the one being built in Palestine even bulldozers and tanks won't bring it down. The destruction of Lebanon and Gaza. Detention, torture without trial. The illegal Iraq war, The terrorist have abandoned their caves for the comfort of rich countries. All courtesy of that man who each time he opened his mouth he put his foot in it up to his knee.
