Redistribute the social cake :pensions old age and parliamentary, free education, free bus travel, etc. Eliminate these benefits to those who have and correspondingly increase them to those who have not. But who has the courage to rectify this?

Political parties are not worried about their proposals; what matters to them is the alliance that will be finalized. The governing party is so strong that the main opposition parties are queuing to join it and the government of the day is sure to return back to power. It is the first time in our history that the opposition parties are almost begging to join the ruling party. On the other hand the population itself does not care much about the party manifesto. People are more keen to see who will be in opposition. Mauritian voters should be more worried about which people to choose as the best counter force in parliament.

A New Republic in the Making ? Far away from the political melting pot, I tend to believe that one gets a rather fair dose of lucidity to observe and analyze the current political game at play on the island. At the outset, it does stand out as a huge paradox for the Labor Party, whilst claiming to be riding the wave of fame, to envisage an alliance with the MMM (which has been its fiercest opponent over the past many years).

The parties should try to project a government which will work on inclusive growth, encompassing all sections of the society. They must promise to enact a Right to Food law that guarantees food for all. They need to propose that every family living below the poverty line will be entitled to 25 kg of rice or wheat per month at Rs 10 per kg. The manifesto to promise subsidised community kitchens, which will be set up in all cities and villages for homeless people with the support of the central government. The parties have to reiterate the contentious promise of implementing 50 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and Municipal and village councils legislatures, which it had failed to do in the last five years. To check communal based groups, that only preys on getting juicy contracts from governments ministries and State owned companies, the parties must propose a law that empowers the National Human Rights Commission to monitor investigation and trial in all such cases. Declaring a zero tolerance policy towards gang based communal group, the parties have to pledge to equip the police and other special security forces with the latest weapons and technology to counter heinous crimes. More specialist police sub-stations be raised and positioned in key locations across the country. The parties manifesto must bear upon working towards forming a "real and secular" government committed to establishing the rule of law. Promising to take effective initiative to establish social harmony and give a fresh thrust to development, the political formations have to pledge to rid Mauritius of crime. Their documents should promise to work for improving and strengthening electricity, roads and other infrastructure facilities, besides encouraging private and government investment in the infrastructure sector. Their manifesto would also work for implementation of an employment guarantee programme for the poor, modernisation of industries, strict enforcement of the minimum wages act and raising the government expenditure on education. And inclusively they have to undertake to repeal the NRPT , tax on savings, and charges attach to private sector employees salaries. The Parastatal bodies to be made more transparent in its overall administrations. Political parties must release incentives measures for the advent of private television, and a charter guaranteeing the freedom of the press. The rewards of high profile posts to political nominees to be scrapped. The National Audit report to be revisited with sanctions against those that pilfers the State revenues. The price of fuel to be made transparent and open, free from obscured opacity.

The next election will demonstrate the truth and reality of Mauritius Social Political development. The Political foreruners seem yet again Coalition to protect their continuity of Office and to assure their electoral success. That is 'selfishness' examplified. The Mauritius Political cause or Needs for reform are second fiddle to that prime party interest.

The political parties must: 1. present their program 2. give dates when execution of each program will be completed 3. show the competence of each candidate/future nominee 4. amend the law to punish any party making useless/false promises.
