En religion, il faut avoir la foi. Pour faire entendre sa voix au sein de la société, il faut savoir faire un peu de politique. Le père Grégoire, en mettant ses mains sur les épaules de Bérenger et de Ramgoolam, ne fait pas autre chose.
Pour le deuxième anniversaire de son mouvement, la Fédération Créoles Mauriciens (FCM), Jocelyn Grégoire a choisi d’installer autour de lui les deux dirigeants politiques les plus puissants actuellement. Au-delà du sens de communication qui habite l’homme d’église, il y a, dans son initiative à cette occasion, un réel désir de légitimation de son discours et de son action. C’est ce qu’il est parvenu à faire en réunissant les leaders rouge et mauve.
Ceux qui critiquent le prêtre, qui se sacrifierait à l’autel du mainstream qu’incarnent des mouvements comme les Sanathan Dharma Temples Federation, l’Union Musulmane ou la Voix Créole, apprécieront encore moins sa démarche. Mais ne dit-on pas souvent que, pour changer un système, il faut se battre à l’intérieur de ce système? Le père Grégoire est, aujourd’hui, l’un des principaux relais des revendications des créoles. S’il veut remplir son rôle, il se doit de participer à un jeu qui n’est pas toujours valorisant…
On pourrait sortir toute une brassée d'arguments pour faire la démonstration que la FCM se laisse gagner par une logique partisane propre aux mouvements sectaires. Mais ce serait réducteur.
Quelles que soient les motivations du père Grégoire, il faut lui reconnaître le mérite de mettre sur le tapis un certain nombre de questions qui auraient dû avoir fait l’objet de débats depuis longtemps déjà. Les jobards de la classe politique traditionnelle ne verront dans cette image, réunissant Bérenger, Grégoire et Ramgoolam, que de vains jeux sur les éventuelles alliances. Ceux qui désapprouvent, dans le fond, les actions du prêtre feront preuve du même autisme identitaire.
Le fait est que, derrière la problématique créole, se pose une série de questions sur des dysfonctionnements propres à la société mauricienne. La communauté créole sent, depuis quelque temps déjà, ce désir d’être traité comme un groupe distinct, à l’image des autres groupes ethniques du pays.
C’est légitime. Mais, dans l’idéal, on aurait souhaité que l’Etat et les puissants de ce pays cessent de voir dans les individus des êtres ethniques.
En faisant, désormais, valoir sa valeur ethnique, la communauté créole liquide, dans une certaine mesure, l’espoir d’une citoyenneté pleine qui s’exprimerait librement au sein d’une République séculière. Car cette communauté incarne des valeurs et un idéal d’ouverture qui auraient pu propulser tout le monde vers la décomposition de l’être ethnique.
Aujourd’hui, la FCM a gagné une bataille vers la reconnaissance. Il ne faut, cependant, pas lui imputer une nouvelle défaite de l’esprit citoyen. Elle ne fait que suivre le mouvement.
C’est, à présent, fait! La République mauricienne n’est composée que de communautés et non d’individus et de citoyens…

He is very well aware that the mulatres, the franco mauritians will not accept to be classed together with creoles which for these guys is quite belittling !!! Mauritius is NOT and will NEVER be a monolithic entity whereby a single substantive political culture can be forcefully imposed onto its landscape. From day one of our history, Mauritius has existed NOT as a Nation of Individuals and citizens but a Nation of COMMUNITIES and a community OF CITIZENS where there is both unity and diversity in BOTH public and private realms. Our Landscape both private and public is and has always been PLURALISTIC AND MULTICULTURAL. Lately Masonic attempts are being made to impose a MONO political culture with its inherent oppressive uniformity relegating our rich diversity not to a Private realm but into an abyss of no return. These Masonic and macabre endeavour stems principally from a fictitious bankrupted and utopic Laicite a la Française, polluting our young minds into believing that our religious, Racial and cultural diversity in anti-thesis to our common sense of belonging and our collective Mauritian identity. There is no single culture that we all can assimilate under a false concept of Mauritianism. Indeed assimilation, the Trojan horse of French Laicite, is a fabricated fantasy and it depicts intolerance of difference. Assimilation aims at suppressing all differences and creates second class citizens for those who cannot and refuse to submit to a dominant culture. All citizens must by default be integrated into the One Nation, but as Roy Jenkins, the Interior Minister in Harold Wilson Government said in a 1966 speech , “integration is not a flattening process of assimilation, but as an equal opportunity, accompanied by cultural diversity in an atmosphere of mutual tolerance." Our pluralistic identity and heritage is a dynamic one and not a static intolerant one. Our communities, despite its complexities and the ever present threats that it faces, is always in a process of continuous change. It reflects the dynamics of gender, religion, generations, globalisation and even the internet era. Despite their inherent uniqueness, our different communities are not isolated from each other and actually overlap on its own terms, borrowing from each other as it deem fit. There are many examples where members of different communities display a natural ability to accommodate several modes of life as if they are “cross-cultural” navigators. To ensure that our One Nation Mauritius is a place where every colour is a good colour and where every individual of any community is valued and respected, where racism and discriminations of all forms are not only checked but eradicated from our landscape and above all from our psyche, we need to address a formidable challenge and invites several searching questions. We need to identify a core of common values and loyalties that must be shared by all communities and individuals alike in the One Nation. But such sharing of common good cannot be achieved in a climate of social exclusion. The principle of equal moral worth cannot take root and flourish within a structure of deep economic or social inequalities.
Every stakeholder must own up to their responsibilities, be they communities or individual citizens. In addition, we need to strike the right balance so as we can achieve the need to treat all citizens equally yet at the same time treat them differently. A different treatment does not mean a less treatment or an inferior treatment nor does it mean be relegated as second class citizen.

You are being very, very unfair to Berenger. HE was the undisputed architect of the 1982 clean-sweep victory of the MMM. Had he not insisted, despite Anerood Jugnauth's objections, to enter into a coalition with the PSM, the MMM would have still won a clean sweep. Had he presented himself as PM instead of Anerood Jugnauth, the MMM would still have won, although not with a clean sweep. The hitch is that Berenger doubts himself. I don't know why he does. Elsewhere, I have said that Berenger's forebears were citizens of Mauritius before any of thos of Indian origin now settled in this country had even heard that there was such a country like Mauritius. But, Berenger know himself better than anybody else can know him. Also, the character of every one of us evolves: it is not frozen over time. Maybe Berenger still has the time to evolve a character like Sonia Gandhi's that would make him fully idetify with the aspirations of the Mauritian people for justice and dignity, and become PM. Matbe hi son will, just like Rahul Gandhi will, without doubt, become PM of India soon enough. Maybe Ivan Collendavelloo will, maybe J-B David.
