Quel culot!

The PM would not have to play his trump card"le pere de la nation" to win the next election as MMM with Paul Berenger as leader are running round as headless chicken.

There are people who excel in the art of convincing the common of mortals. Navin is good at selling his image to a gathering. Berenger has the ability to convince the common man of x on one day and the contrary of x on another day. Both men ignore that there are many thinking people around. Looking for convincing words is easy when one has a horde of advisors to think for them and prepare wonderful speeches. The exciting play of words. Look at Obama. He too has advisors but when he addresses his audience, he looks at them straight in the eyes and talks to them with his own brain and heart. There is no point highlighting the many blunders of Berenger as PM. A sheer waste of time now. But let us look at some of the own initiatives of the actual PM right from the time of his taking office. His nominations at the helm of major institutions: 1. Ministries - Gokhool, Jeetah, Etienne, Tang, Gowreesoo, Bappoo: self explanatory. 2. Air Mauritius – Buckory, Veerasamy and later Ujodha: a real disaster for years ahead. 3. Airports of Mauritius – Ex-Chairman (can’t even recall his name) and Maraye: a waste of precious time for such a key sector. 4. Mtius Port Authority - Chadee and Philippe: simply shameful. 5. Bank of Mauritius – What a mess! 6. State Investment Corporation – Big money for no concrete results. 7. MBC/TV – no comment. 8. Enterprise Mauritius – A small big mouth who enjoys chasing off true professionals for mediocre individuals so he can rule upon them as His Majesty’s subjects. A filthy individual in quest of superiority. 9. ICAC saga with Air Mauritius. Whatever the ruling of one (re)tired Mauritian, thinking Mauritians have also ruled. 10. Allocation of state land, nominations overseas. The list can go on. In the meantime, the mindset in the country is dangerously changing for the worst. The security of people in Mauritius is a daily nightmare. Our homes are no more secure from thieves. Our roads worst off. Kids are shamelessly abused by adults. Greed over-rules all other consideration at all levels, esp. among the rich. People should sleep or pray with wide-opened eyes. Principles, human values, quality of life – no one could not care less. ‘L’Enfer au paradis’. Si bien dit! But it is not the fault of Navin nor Ramgoolam anyway. Who's to blame then? ... Ok, let's rather have another speech in the mean time !

Nice speech! Do we know who wrote it by the way??? It might be more believable if Navin could actually pronounce the word "DEVELOPMENT" correctly! Or is that synonymous with how he's also going to botch the actions on the road to Developing as well??? And was the timing of the speech his choice or was it imposed on him... given the fact that all actual World Leaders had already left at that time or had better things to do at the G20. At least he can't tell us now he was invited there to help them solve the world financial crisis! Or show them how to successfully get your country out of the black list of Small Island Tax Paradises!

From: Spin and Flame. How politicians should persuade Navin sans le Ramgoolam. Righly said the top leader in Mauritius Establishment should endeavour to show intrinsic qualities and versatility in managing the affairs of the Republic. The speech of the prime minister at the United Nations can only be of positive leanings when the uniformity of thought and reflections apply first to the country, its people, and institutions. Showing the way during world leaders meeting is one thing, putting into practice those noble norms and concepts in one’s own territory look best. Too often the front window get most attention and care for display, but the behind the scene hides graveyard and misdemeanours. Plato's Rebuke to Politicians. We may ask ancient political commentators Cicero and Aristotle for their advice on how politicians should persuade. Cicero, remember, said that politicians should use every tool at their disposal to win friends and influence people. Aristotle admitted that emotional appeals could be as powerful as rational arguments. But Plato says, "Poppycock!"Plato was familiar with a great orator in his time--a man named Gorgias, who thought that anyone superbly trained in rhetoric could gain political power, just because he could speak and convince the masses. But Plato wasn't convinced. Here's why (and we're quoting him on this). Mr. Plato, Gorgias says there is no subject on which he cannot speak before a popular audience more persuasively than any professional. Is rhetoric really that powerful? "A popular audience means an ignorant audience, doesn't it? He won't be more convincing . . . before experts." Why not? "An ignorant person is more convincing than the expert before an equally ignorant audience. . . . It is enough for him to have discovered a knack of convincing the ignorant that he knows more than the experts." A knack? A knack for what? "Producing a kind of gratification and pleasure. . . . The generic name which I should give it is pandering." Why is it pandering? "Well, do you think that knowing and believing are the same, or is there a difference between knowledge and belief?” They’re different, no? "Quite right, and you can prove it like this. If you were asked whether there are such things as true and false beliefs, you would say that there are, no doubt. . . . But are there such things as true and false knowledge?” No. False knowledge isn't knowledge at all. "Then knowledge and belief are clearly not the same thing. . . . Yet men who believe may be just as properly called convinced as men who know. . . . May we posit then the existence of two kinds of conviction, one which gives knowledge and one which gives belief without knowledge?" Sure, let's posit. "Now which kind of conviction about right and wrong is created by oratory in courts of law and elsewhere, the kind which engenders knowledge or the kind which engenders belief without knowledge? . . . . The orator doesn't teach juries and other bodies about right and wrong--he merely persuades them." So what would be a better way? In my view, oratory is a spurious counterfeit of a branch of the art of government. What branch is that? The administration of justice. . . . The difference is that pandering pays no regard to the welfare of its object, but catches fools with the bait of ephemeral pleasure. . . . It makes pleasure its aim instead of good. Are today's politician’s panderers, then, or true administrators of justice? Do the speakers in your opinion make it the constant aim of their speeches to improve their fellow citizens as much as possible, or do they too set out merely to gratify their hearers, sacrificing the public interest to their own personal success, and treating their audience like children? Uh, you're putting us on the spot here. What do you say? "There are two kinds of political oratory, one of them is pandering and base claptrap; only the other is good, which aims at the edification of the souls of the citizens and is always striving to say what is best, whether it be welcome or unwelcome to the ears of the audience. But I don't believe that you have ever experienced the second type.

Actions speak louder than words.
