Nazin, you are right. however, very few people think along your line. it is a myth to think that bebeejaun represent muslims and that ramgoolam represents hindus. it is a falsehood that has been fed to people that cannot think for themselves. the whole electoral system has to change in mauritius. to start with the electoral boundaries should be redefined. there should be sixty counstituencies represented by one mp each instead of the present twenty with three mp. that would bring better accountability. all party political donations should be declared and registered, with journalists having the right to question the motives of those donations.why is it that only a hindu and a vaish can become the prime minister of this nation.

Mons Nazin Esoof Can we introduce paragraphing in long posts such as Communion. It is very uncomfortable and off-putting to read 1 paragraph long posts. No single country, India, France and UK , included are the 1-size fits all, model of democracy for Mauritius. All three countries and others have good and bad practices and legacies. It is for us to CUT AND PASTE. Why do we need to set Religious , Ethnic identity against notion of National identity.

communion, you have a naive view of the world., india is hardly a good axample of democracy. bihar orissa and others are amongst the most corrupt states in india, where votes are bought by the highest bidder.. if india is such a good example of democracy, why is it that the gandhi's have been in power for most part of its independence years. india is hardly an example of good governance. as far as mauritus is concerned it is following in india's footsteps. the political parties have pigeon-holed each and every community to solicit their votes. for democracy to thrive and serve the nation it has to have proper accountability which is sadly lacking. we have seen it time and again when the election approaches the polical parties are ready to jump in bed with any of their rivals, no matter how much they loathe them, as long as it puts them in power. it has been said that democracy is not the perfect form of government but it is the best one we have, and i agree with that. however when it comes to third world countries it is nothing more than elected dictatorship, that does not mean we should give up.

People in mauritius do not belive in their Country...they cann0t ...too much is outside their control ...tooo much challenges their very being....their colour their caste their religion...their social class..their ethnicity..their values. The PMSD of Jules Koening promulgated the Political concept of a mauritian Nation based on it's European foundation values. The PTr usede the work struggle of dignitaries like GuY Rosemond as their '' Trojan Horse'' to bring a Communal stand to the Asian political stance throug Communalism because their politicians know no better to acccedde to political power and in return grant privileges to their supporters ..such is the way in Asia. or the Indian subcontinent as divided as ever. Gaetan Duval sought and fought for the mauritian ideology advancing that until a mature maurotian cognisance became more evident mauritius could not be ready and mature to organise a true Society of Mauritius. I believe he was the truth of our current reality. The young mauritian generation are lost and despised the culture that has evolved with Ptr and others and are looking for every way to leave the Island and to adhere to the Societies that Sir Gaetan Duval sought to prepare mauritians in equal stand with the Business and social emancipation of our Society. Hd the Ptr of Ramgoolam not hinduanised our system and so corrupt the elections of 1968 and subsequent, the MAURITIUS Society would exist in splemdour and glory today. One day we will hold a number of pour Politicians or their Estate to account .

From: COMMUNION Il n’y a que le politicien de notre communauté qui est capable de nous protéger. Mais la bêtise peut aller plus loin. A house divided against itself cannot stand. This warning to Mauritius holds true for the nation today? Mauritius is a multi-religious, multi-cultural and multi-lingual society. Forces have always been strong in its soil. Genuine and discreet social groups’ movement act as bridge builders. They effectively counter the narrow mindedness of some and spread love and harmony. They have their roots among the common people, the average citizen, the poor and those of lowly origin. They keep their distance from the rulers and ruling class. It is important to note that it is clash of interest, which brings about unrest and tensions in society. It is vested interests. Different political parties carve out their vote-banks among religious communities and target some community, in order to emerge as champion of one’s own community. In fact, they are champions of their own political interests, rather than community interests. India- years have passed since India became independent. The democratic processes are intensifying and bringing more democratic awareneness among all, inclusive of minorities, and weaker sections of India and they get better organised to demand their due share of power. In coming years there will be more yielding and more sharing of power to minorities and low-caste Hindus (Dalits). It is to be noted that India’s people rejected communal excesses and vote UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government led by the Congress. Thus the people of India again prove that they are secular and tolerant and desire harmony and better relations. Also, communal forces are loosing credibility among people of India. They have no achievement to show except communal rhetoric and bloodshed. Before coming to power they claimed to be “clean” and non-corrupt. However, now many corruption scandals are coming out in which their leaders were involved during their rule. On this count also, they have lost ground. On the whole, the common people of India are desirous of peaceful existence and do not appreciate turmoil. Thus in coming 30 years, it appears divisive forces will find it difficult to regain their lost ground and hate& closet politics will be weakened. However, much will depend on performance of secular forces also. Divisive forces of any kind thrive more due to failure of secular forces than on account of their inherent strength. Divisive forces gain strength only because secular forces fail to assert and perform. Divisive forces, it appears, will lose ground and will greater urge among people for co-existence and harmony living in coming 30 years. The BJP's attempts to turn religious issue into a political one have failed. The BJP today is a shadow of its former self, having failed to sense the pulse of a nation wanting change, stability, growth, income and better living conditions. At the same time, leaders and parties in states such as Bihar, Delhi and Orissa, which have provided corruption-free pro-growth governance, have emerged victorious. The fact remains that the development record of the BJP at the federal level and as head of provincial governments is not bad. But, its skewed political approach and habit of looking at short cuts to power has shrouded its good performance and engendered suspicions in the minds of the electorate. If the BJP, as the main opposition, plays it right and shuns its communal politics, there is every-likelihood that the country will head towards a two-party system and away from the squabbles that invariably accompany coalitions. There is no doubt that the BJP has to get its act together, in the interests of a healthy democracy and to keep the Congress in check. A wizened electorate voted for Congress again this year in the hope of a national policy focus, development and stable government under the leadership of Manmohan and party leader Sonia Gandhi. A society in which religious diversity exists is invited to recognise that human history is not one story only; even where a majority culture and religion exists, it is part of a wider picture. And very frequently the engagement of different religions in dialogue and co-operation will open up and highlight the many ways in which diverse traditions share a heritage at various points in history. The histories of religion intersect, in their texts and their social development and their political encounters. I would maintain that the presence of diverse religious groups in a society, allowed to have a voice in the decision-making processes of society without embarrassment, is potentially an immense contribution to a genuinely active and interactive social harmony and a sense of moral accountability within the social order. It is not something to be afraid of. This argument, of course, does not directly address the details of interfaith dialogue or its methods; but it does suggest that when honest and careful dialogue is going on, this will be for the ultimate good of any society. As stated, none of this implies for a moment that dialogue entails the compromise of fundamental beliefs or that the issue of truth is a matter of indifference; quite the opposite. But there is a proper kind of humility which, even as we proclaim our conviction of truth, even as we God faithful proclaim that all human beings are called to union with God, obliges us to acknowledge with respect the depth and richness of another's devotion to and obedience to what they have received as truth. As we learn that kind of respect for each other, we remember we all have things to learn. And it is that expectant and positive attitude to our mutual encounter that makes the relation between passionately convinced Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, whatever else, finally a gift and not a threat to a thoroughly contemporary and plural society and its hopes for coherence, justice and peace.
