| anonymous | | | The opposition had to declare defeat - no chance to go forward in this country unless the party leader is from an indian descendant. Mauritius is the most cosmopolitan country in the world. Dream holidays for tourists. In fact in this country there has always been a communal politcal canvassing. It is sad to say that this beautiful island is led by the actual prime minister who plays on the emotions of his communtiy. This is the only country, correct me if I'm wrong, where there is alliance with other political party before the election just to win. The last week of the political campaign, the prime minister has asked the public to choose their future prime minister between him (hindou maurtian) and Paul Berenger (white mauritian). As the indian population is in majority, your guess is as good as mine.
I feel very sad for my country and the next generation. | | | Rafik | | | Raj alias Cromwell and so on, can't you spare us your intellectual diarrhea? | | | Dr rajeev | | | It's easy to attribute Navin's success on his opponents' failure. Others are jealous of his success. Navin Ramgoolam has learnt his lessons from his previous mistakes when he first joined the political arena. He is now a matured forward thinking leader with a dynamic team.
His team has paved the way for a modern Mauritius with lots of policies that are, and will be conjucive to the economy. He is also someone who has a rich experience having spent a good chunk of his life in the UK. He knows how to communicate, negotiate and
deal with international affairs competently.
We haven't forgotten the time when the previous government threatened to withdraw Mauritius from the Commonwealth or the dodgy illovo deals.
The current opposition never come forward with a single good solution to alleviate the financial crisis. They have been barking on top of the roofs like a toothless dog. Some of their criticisms and public comments are childish, irrational and reflect their poverty of thought. Some are blaming the slowdown of the Mauritian economy on the government and trying to instil these ideas in the lay person's mind. These politicians are either intellectually mediocre or ignorant of current world affairs. It shows how much they care for the country.
No politician or political party is flawless. Above all, politics will never be a clean business. There are so many examples in developed democracies at the moment to back my argument..
I do agree with some of the comments that the population can be easily influenced by the political parties. It will take a long time to change the way some people think and reason. But bear in mind that there is an increasingly growing proportion that cannot be fooled or brainwashed. And we need more of these people if we want our island to prosper.
The government does not make a nation. It's role is to provide guidance in all aspects of a democracy. The population has to be responsible and play their part in building a better nation.

L’avenir s’obscurcit?
Mauritius political circle is engrossed in managing public opinion in the most disconcerting way. Every event , be it social, religious and otherwise is grab for sending messages that get relayed on the national television , and the lounge viewer imbibes these endless political statements in a most apparently relax manner. From the prime minister and other legislative governing members , their daily routine for television coverage looks like an obsessive necessity , never mind what they say- the compulsion for frequent appearance on the tv screen reach unlimited scale. The national television team get into the act with a servile mindset , the master(s) voice must be on air, and in image , that any preset tv programme get to be rescheduled for the political head to broadcast some news get the prime consideration. Such over faithfulness by the national television has enormously contributed to its tarnished reputation. There is much discussion about whether the National television and radio are positive for Mauritian democracy. Is the process of political communications by the news media and by parties responsible for civic malaise? Drawing on the history of propaganda as well as on contemporary research in social psychology, Age of Propaganda shows how the tactics used by political campaigners, demagogues, and others often take advantage of our emotions by appealing to our deepest fears and most irrational hopes, creating a distorted vision of the world we live in. Based on an examination one may reflect that while "blaming the messenger" we need to understand and confront more deep-rooted flaws in the systems of representative democracy. The growing tendency to treat election campaigns as competing product advertisements. Does State owned television make it easier for citizens to find political information? Do today's highly competitive old and new mass media serve the needs of democratic citizenship? Does the new media environment produce public opinion that is more or less manipulated, or manipulated in new ways? Democracy and the Media. Cambridge University Press, 2000. This book presents a unique perspective on the relationship between politics and the media in different kinds of political regimes in Europe, North America and Asia. These essays show that media effects on politics are the product of interactions among media technologies, the structure of the media market, the legal and regulatory framework, the nature of basic political institutions, and the characteristics of individual citizens. The authors' conclusions challenge conventional wisdom concerning the political roles and effects of the mass media on regime support and change, on the political behaviour of citizens, and on the quality of democracy. In Mauritius republic -The governing authority makes encompassing use of the national television and display overbearing attitude towards the media in general. The incongruity comes with full force. Frequent references to harness the press, given the absence of private television, is a mantra that is aired at infinity. Yet anyone reading the remarks of labour party on medium such as Facebook and Youtube find freedom of expression unbridled, and without threat of sanction. Labour party is on Facebook and it says Sign up for Facebook to join Mauritius Labour Party (Parti Travailliste de L'Ile-Maurice). It adds this: Many thanks also to our members for making this group a platform of ideas and debate. We are indeed the leading political group on the web. Congratulations to all. The Discussion Board gives this: Do we need 70 MPs for 1.2M people? I don't think so..../ 23 posts by 11 people. It also include: - The Mauritius Labour Party Official Website. It states: We have completely redesigned our website with a view to further improving our communication with the growing online community in Mauritius and abroad. Get to know what we do, get the facts, what we have achieved, news and coming events. .... . One remark though it looks most conspicuous that mainly it is labour elected representatives and their families that appear on the labour party website. The pertinent question that comes to mind is that given the governing political regime explore almost every avenue for making itself seen on the front line, it could easily gives support for the launching of a private television, especially for opening a window for debating the issues in this unprecedented crisis times. This fresh platform for debate and ideas would be accessible to those that cannot afford computers and other forms of expensive medium. Even more laudable would be that new private participants with mainly local stakeholders , and using the creole mode of expression ;would thrash the domestic issues, and give a sense of belonging and shape a critical mind in the public. Aiming to provide a state-of-the-art synthesis of cross-national political communication, this impressive development would mark the maturation of an important contribution in nation building; make a strong case that cross-national analysis of communication systems holds several advantages over one unique State run Television Corporation. In the expectation of the coming of the General election, the view is held that Political communication (also called psychological operations (psy-ops) or information operations), encompasses a wide range of communicative behaviours that have political ends. One element encompasses the conduct of an effective election campaign, to disseminate the candidate's message and to counter the message of one's opponents. Free and fair election with the advent of private television is an happening as important as the dream bridge. With the existing confined television state ownership, some argue those evolving communications technologies and advertising and marketing techniques are damaging democratic practice by replacing thoughtful discussion with simplistic soundbites and manipulative messages. Campaigns play on our deepest fears and most irrational hopes with the result being that we have a skewed view of the world. That said, media effects on politics are not uniform around the world. Rather, they are the product of the types of media technologies, the structure of the media market, the legal and regulatory framework, the nature of political institutions, and the characteristics of individual citizens. The case comes most vividly when the State oligopoly canvasses those communications technology in a skewed and narrow manner.
| | | Roukaya K | | | Indeed Mauritian politics have only superficially evolved. Soundbites, image control freaks and photo opportunities. Ramgoolam pretends to be modern (inspired by great thoughts and writings) but unable to put anything in practice. Image inflation and content defecient are our politicians! There is nothing what they say or do that egg people to be motivated..maybe somewhere we mauritians deserve those type of leaders as most of us are content in being docile and unfazed about things affecting us! | | | Nitin Goreeba | | | My Prime Minister is a great chess player. He excels in moving his men & to put his adversaries check & mate. Long live Navin may GOD be with you for ever | |
