Transport
-Sooner or later an alternative means of transport must be in place for our country. As I am not an expert in the domain I would not dare recommend any alternative. But those in charge must ride off the beaten tracks like buses, and consider light rail, mono rail, or metro leger.
It seems bus fleet owners are against the idea of any other alternative, as they are milking the transport gratuit scheme.Even Navin has conceded that there is fraud. Please let go for one moment your political differences and work together for a safe modern and viable transport system that will benefit one and all for at least the next 100 years. My father was amongst one of the first to have public buses on the road.Am writing in that capacity.

Metro Leger
Jincy, we all want want the "best" transport system in Mauritius BUT it must be within our financial means. Using the "metro leger" which will soon be operational in Macao (about 20 km long, 4-car convoy carrying 800 passengers at a time) as a benchmark, we are talking about US1billion (about Rs30 milliards!) investment: where will that money come from? The entire annual budget of Mauritius is Rs80 milliards. Suppose we cut down the Rs8 milliards from our budget each year. Then, the "metro leger" can be built after 4 years of SACRIFICE: Can the Mauritiian population undergo such a sacrifice? This is exactly what the Singaporeans did to build their MRT / LRT systems. I have lived in Singapore for some 19 years now and I can tell you that everything that is achieved there arise from SACRIFICES made over time. Unfortunately, I do not see this spirit in my homeland, that I am visiting now as I do every December!
Metro leger
The Metro leger or any alternative transport system for Mauritius will be a leap into the future and boost the economy:However the Mauritian Political system means that you have mostly idiots who are lining their own pockets in charge and they have no clue hence there will never be a true feasibility study:What you will get is a shceme that line the politicians and accomplices pockets and the resulting project will not be fit for purpose---Bring in an outside firm (let ICAC run the contract)and the work will be done--why not the Singaporians with the expertise already?I pity the Mauritians with their rotten ritualistic communalist and racist political establishment --there should be an Arablike movement to eradicte the rot and restart from scratch--maybe then success will be achieved
Transport system priorities
The authorities have to resolve or seek a solution to the current transportation system in the first place rather than investing heavily in an alternate system that they might not be able to manage.
The bus system should have been assessed and managed in such a way that the transportation system is more efficient and the existing infrastructure improved.
There seem to be no plan from the government to improve the transport system and to take measures to remove cars from the roads - encouraging the use of public transport.
Righteousness
We need to pull together as one nation to built the metro leger. It is not by making comments that will solve the transportation system in Mauritius. I have spent most of life outside of Mauritius and I can tell you that it is the same as when I left my homeland. Those who deserve to head the metro leger project will never be allowed to simply because of politics. There is no future if there is selfishness among the lots. It will never come to pass.
We will have to wait till dinosaur juice runs out.
Let's start with an analogy, Bagatelle.
If you build more shopping malls, does that mean people are gonna shop more? (I'm pretty sure employers do not pay their employees using the shopping malls per capita index.)
No, New shopping malls simply eat into the share of existing ones. In the same way a new transportation system will eat into the share of the market of existing ones.
In our case: Bus companies
Care to count how many votes the political parties would lose if the bus companies had to fire people? A whole lot! Are they stupid enough to do it? I don't think so, realpolitiks.
