L’époux de Michaela Harte (photo) est longuement revenu sur l’après-midi du 10 janvier 2011, où sa jeune épouse avait été retrouvée morte dans sa baignoire. Il a aussi révélé avoir été menotté par la police et a avoué que les policiers l’ont considéré et traité comme un suspect.
C’est en larmes que John McAreavey, l’époux de Michaela Harte, a témoigné aux Assises ce mercredi 6 juin. Interrogé par l’avocat de la poursuite, Me Mehdi Manrakhan, il a craqué lorsqu’il a été invité à relater sa rencontre avec Michaela, son mariage, sa lune de miel et la journée qui a précédé la mort de celle-ci.
John McAreavey a d’abord indiqué qu’il a été présenté à Michaela Harte par des amis en 2005. « Depuis, nous étions inséparables. En cinq ans, il nous est arrivé d’être séparé que pendant trois jours », a-t-il dit. Au sujet du jour de son mariage, il a déclaré que les célébrations se sont tenues le  jour du 27eme anniversaire de  Michaela Harte. « Une fois le mariage célébré, nous sommes partis en lune de miel, en séjournant la première semaine à Paris, et la deuxième  à Maurice ». Ce n’est que deux jours avant le crime qu’ils sont arrivés à Maurice.
Revenant sur le jour du meurtre, il a expliqué qu’au réveil il s’est dirigé en compagnie de son épouse au restaurant pour le petit-déjeuner. Ils ont par la suite pris des directions différentes, Michaela Harte s’est rendue vers la piscine, tandis que John McAreavey est allé suivre des cours de golf. « Au retour, j’ai reçu un message de mon épouse, me demandant d’aller lui trouver un tampon car elle avait ses règles », a-t-il ajouté. « Je suis alors parti vers la réception, et là bas on m’a fait comprendre qu’il n’y avait pas de tampon. L’employée qui s’y trouvait m’a cependant dit qu’elle allait m’en trouver », a-t-il déclaré.
Après avoir pu récupérer le tampon, déclare-t-il, il a rejoint son épouse et se sont amusés dans la piscine avant d’aller déjeuner.  Après le déjeuner, Michaela a commandé du thé. « Elle  s’est aussitôt rendue dans la chambre (1025), pour récupérer des biscuits au chocolat », a-t-il relaté. Cependant, constatant  que son épouse prenait trop de temps, il s’est dirigé vers la chambre. Mais la porte était fermée. « Je n’avais pas ma carte d’accès. J’ai par la suite frappé à la porte pendant une quinzaine de secondes. Comme elle ne m’a pas ouvert, je suis alors parti vers la réception. Ils m’ont envoyé quelqu’un pour ouvrir la porte », s’est-il souvenu.
Une fois la porte ouverte, John McAreavey dit être confronté à une véritable scène d’horreur : son épouse gisait  dans la baignoire. « J’ai essayé de la réanimer, en posant son corps sur le sol, mais c’était trop tard », avance-t-il. « J’ai crié à l’aide et lorsque les médecins sont venus, ils ont confirmé son décès » », a-t-il expliqué.
John McAreavey a aussi révélé avoir été conduit au poste de police de Piton. « J’étais menotté, et là un policier m’a dit de cesser de pleurer, que je suis encore jeune et que j’aurais l’occasion de rencontrer de très belles filles ». John McAreavey a aussi fait ressortir que les policiers lui ont sommé de dire toute la vérité, qu’ils voulaient l’aider, mais s’il refusait de collaborer, il risquait plusieurs années derrière les barreaux.

Can't blame the cops.
The police screwed up the investigation but you cannot blame them for suspecting the husband. John here is a very good guy and loved his wife but there was no way for them to know this. In the US, in a lot of these cases, the killer is usually the spouse. That was NOT the case here but the police did not know anything about this couple. I hope the two on the stand get convicted. Michaela, her husband and her family are very nice people and I hope they get justice.

It seems to me that Sabrina knows Michaela,her husband,John and her family much better than anybody in Mauritius.How come.She says," the police did not know anything about this couple..".How much Sabrina knows about this couple and Mauritian law.?Why is she thinking that " these two on the stand get convicted".Is the lawyer defending John and his family ? Why is she making such an accusation on the two suspects ?

Guys, you can never know wat happened between z couple, whether they had a fight or not. I totally agree with Sabina. The police obviously won't know how close they were or whatsover. Moreover i heard that late Harte's was insured and the amount of insurance was huge. So personally we can neither incriminate z culprits nor any1 until it is proved as the law says.

I agree with many of the people making their comments here about Mauritius police.Mauritian Police believe that they are above law.,and have too much power .They lack tacs and are very impolite people.They threaten their " suspect" so that the latter will "vow" their crimes,even if they have not committed such crimes.When I was young,about 11 years of age I confronted a police officer at Trou Aux BIches.The light of my bike was dim,but it was on.The officer stopped me and asked me,very impolitely."...eta couyon to pas trouver to la lumiere li faible..." I answered to him,mais li p allimer ,,"he replied to me ,"eta pas coz couma talere mo donne toi en klaq."
Bon ok.mo desol.He asked me,"..donne moi Rs.10.00 si non mo bez ferm toi dans casso.."I did not have RS.10.00 only two.I gave it to him and let me free from this ugly situation.

i think that people in Mauritius has a different views about a couple from abroad. In Mauritus we are stick to our culture and community. No couple born Mauritus would be able to live an engaged life before marriage, because this isnt acceptable in our society. Young mauritian couple from any community had to married and at that instant that they get engaged, its a tradition with our religion. So the moment they get married they are stuck for not knowing their partner well. And the partner could not walk away from it they had already married by law. This is how the irish couple did before they were married, they get engaged first and live together for some more years before they were married. Its a better way of doing things right, get to know thier partner first before putting the rings on the fingers. This has become an alarming situation in mauritus that any murdered case happen the first suspect is the wife or the husband, things are different here especially in Europe, if you are not happy with a person you just walk away ,,this is how it should be in Mauritius...

I can't believe that a man whose wife had been murdered was treated in in a cavalier manner by the police by handcuffing the husband without an iota of evidence against him. It seemed very easy to lay the blame on an innocent and fragile man with their usual habit of extracting a confession,when there was none.

J'ai parfois envie de revenir vivre Maurice mais quand je lis les journaux et que je vois des atrocits pareilles, franchement je me dis que je suis bien o je suis, surtout pour mes enfants. Pour un si petit pays avoir tant de crimes tous les jours c'est incroyable. Et de plus en plus de touristes pris pour cibles. Ces pauvres idiots ne ralisent donc pas que le tourisme c'est leur gagne-pain? Wherever you are I am sure there are crimes everyday...If this guys was a suspect at the time, of course he should be handcuffed ... statistics show that most murders are committed by close relatives..... Crimes like this sadly happens all too often, all over the world.
For the irish to paint the whole island with such a judgmental brush,
really speaks to their common sense (or the lack thereof).
While I am horrified and pray for Michaela's loved ones daily, I have absolutely no sympathy
for those who are thriving on her tragic end. This includes this Irish media. I am sorry that the Irish does not
want to read about religious hatred, terrorism and Sinn Fin anymore.
But that's no reason to drag our reputation in the mud.
