The Human Rights Committee of the United Nations has brought to the attention of all Mauritians that having to declare one’s belonging to any specific community in order to be allowed to stand as a candidate for general elections flies in the face of the basic tenets of democracy. That the exercise of democracy should not be impeded by shackles for the implementation of the Best Loser System is self-evident. In essence what is being declared is that all Mauritians are equal and they need not have to say what they are as long as everyone knows who they are. Never mind if they themselves do not know who they are.
This equality is a fact of daily life in this “ plaisir” country where being high means being high in all sorts of ways. Take the developments in the unraveling of the dangerous drugs traffi cking case which, according to the media, has allegedly one Gro Derek as its boss. Forget about the international rami- fi cations of the movement of the drugs from the countries of Asia to the rest of the world via Africa and spare no thoughts about all the barons who comfortably sit in the major capitals of the world reaping the benefi ts of this deadly trade. Think rather of how Gro Derek has enlisted the assistance of Mauritians of all communities to promote his business. He is ahead of the times. We are told that his right hand man is Mr Ashish Dayal.
He allegedly enlisted the assistance of a steward on the ship that was used for the transport and release at sea of the parcel containing the drugs who is Mr Maudarbacus. For all his business deals necessitating godly intervention, the person anointed to intervene extraterrestrially was Maulana Beeharry. And there were others like the sailor Azie. There are other names which are bound to come out since Mr Ashish Dayal seems to be prepared to spit all the venom against his mentor and the maulana may decide that he infi ltrated the network in order to better dismantle it. But never lose sight of the fact that this is a major business which brings in millions – or billions – of rupees. It would be interesting for the MRA to follow the route of the Derek money not only prior to the arrest of Mr Dayal, but also since. Money talks in a way which is unequalled and presumably all those who have been involved after the arrest of Gro Derek must be careful in not being accused of handling tainted money. But money, tainted or not, also buys silence.
Gro Derek did not wait for the UN Human Rights Committee to do what politicians of the major parties find difficult to do. Gro Derek identifi ed all those who could be efficient, talented, competent and willing to work in his interest and he delegated his responsibility to them. There was no necessity for him to pick his collaborators according to the ethnic group or community to which they belonged. As long as they were Mauritians who were prepared to take the assignment and to do it well, that was fi ne with him. And his business prospered.
Until an accident happened and Mauritius became aware of the extent of the drugs trade and all the people in so many sectors who fuel that trade.
Bearing in mind how the MCIT collapsed the Harte murder case ( Legends Hotel now turned Lux), ADSU must already ensure that it also does not suffer the MCIT fate when the Gro Derek trial starts. There is too much at stake for everyone.

Gro Derek
Very good, Anil. As ugly as it might appear, all of us should drum up that Gro Derek has shown the way to be a Mauritian, enlisting competence regardless of race and religion
gro derek
our leading politicians keep reminding us to have faith in the competency of our blessed institutions and all would be revealed. And what other choice us poor mortals have other than wait with our fingers croosed in the hope that MCIT, MRA etc... do not get their knickers in another twist!.
Gro Derek has done it already
Cry my beloved country.
United nations
I thought Anil your elucidation of Gros Derek nation building spirit is perceptive.Whether he is found guilty and spend a good time of his life behind bars ia a moot point.Let us stay he has made a small gesture of redemption by his understanding of meritocracy. If ever he goes down, somehow upon his release I doubt very much if he will get a gong. His infamy behind the gaol would have put paid to that.Do you think our politicians will learn from his wit, though not from his trade?.

The GROS DEREK GATE is a smokescreen and this alienates us from what is happening around us. Why not talk about the average Mauritian shopping cart?????
Gro Derek
I always look forward to read Anil Gayan's articles. He is a very clever, intelligent and down to earth person. You are right Anil, if only there would be meritocracy in Mtius we would be a far better nation. This is the reason why in 1982 we had a government which got elected on the basis that people would be selected for jobs not because of their ethnic belongings but on merit. Unfortunately the government collapsed and we are back to square one.
He was never a Maulana...
I am ashamed that Mr Gayan, who is far to be a layman, has upgraded Moussa Beeharry's status. A one day a week so called Prison Imam (or autoproclaimed one) is now, for the learned SC, a Maulana. Better check and counter-check rather than write irresponsibly. Jummah Mosque must issue a communique to enlighten the likes of Gayan...
Vive Gro....
Et si Gro Dereck devenait Prime minister et l'autre en prison comme le souhaitait Jugnauth .....
Gro Derek has done it already
good article.
However, where anil got that title 'Maulana' for Beeharry? Interesting to know...
Anil Gayan so lartik

Equal Opportunities in Action
Gros Dereck did not wait for an Act of Parliament to practice equal opportunities. Unfortunately, he used it in an illegal way. By the way Anil, drug was also a problem when you were minister, yet you chose to look the other way. Was it politically convenient to do so?
don't miss the target

Gro Derek has indeed hired competent 'Mauritians' to work for him and by the same token has done away with the use of this other bunch of competent Mauritians, that is lawyers, accountants, economists to circulate/invest his billions of rupees,Euros ,US Dollars etc.!Indeed ADSU appears to be taking too long to bring in formal charges against those arrested! The trail of the mafia/drug traffickers leads to a very long journey taking years to complete,ADSU should start sending to jail those it has got under its control right now! This is no time for hair-splitting!Basically,ADSU has got enough evidence to send some of those would be jail birds into oblivion!ADSU SHOULD BE IN CHARE OF THE ENQUIRY,WHILE THE PACE OF THE ENQUIRY CANNOT BE DICTATED BY THE DRUG MAFIA!Gro Derek reminds one of the Pakistani national who could barely speak English and who flew in into the UK to ontain a loan.He finally mahabed to get a loan ,at the time of some 400 million pounds sterling, from a bank ,based in Bond Street,in the heart of London and this without the need to provide any guarantee what so ever! This loan led to the collapse of the bank while all its directors /managers were sent to jail ,most of them for twenty five years! The Pakistani national has flown back to Pakistan where he has built a castle paradise for himself and there was nothing that the British authorities could do to him,to restore that cash!Only ,Allah can take that money from me,claimed the Pakistani! But what ruse did the Pakistani us to obtain that money?Simple, just blackmail! The Pakistani had paid prostitutes to wine and dine the bank managers and filmed /photographed them secretly, during the after dinner.Directors paid out of their own pocket to send their fellow directors on holiday, young girls, limousines, hotels, airfares included...such was the power that the Pakistani had held over them! That incident tooh place over some twenty years ago.Just imagine today, with the very advanced cameras what a determine criminal can do,plus girls, money of course! In the meabtime while ADSU has been allegedly refering to politicians... To note that the Judge was very impressed with the Pakistani's astuce!
Un bon Tuyau
We must all remeber ,IT STARTED, by HECTOR TUYAU,investing a bungalow to seize the first drug stash, although Gro Derek putting on a fierce parade. As someone said, we are all focused on this case, while the politicians can safely do their dirty business, being out of focus.
