Cry My Motherland, Cry.
Compromise implies negotiations, concessions, bargains and prearrangements. The so-called pact has been conceded by the two leaders of the two political parties. In the first place, the question that arises is: are all the components of the two parties in agreement with the deal made by their respective leaders or have the two leaders acted on their own fancies and caprices? If the latter is the case, it is certainly undemocratic and the fellow members must raise their voices and exercise pressure on their respective leaders even at the risk of being side-lined. Members of political parties are expected to be responsible people with ideals and conviction. They cannot be string-puppets in the hands of their leaders and yield to all their whims. It is sad to see MLAs talking big at every occasion but hold their tails between their legs when faced with their leaders and weakly chicken out. The second question that arises: what rights do these two leaders have to change the very structure and configuration of our systems to suit their personal crazes without seeking a consensus with us, the voters? The electorates and the citizens of this country have never given them the right to modify the system so as to entrust more power upon themselves. Besides being unethical, this is undemocratic and the electorates and citizens of the country have every right to raise their voices and object. The third question that arises is: What negotiations have taken, what concessions have been made, what have been bargained and what prearrangements have been agreed upon and how will these have an impact on our lives? The fourth question that arises is: why are the pressure groups silent? Have they also been given their share in the bargain? Pressure groups have an important role to play in the society they operate. Their role is to put pressure on government on issues and abuses. They are supposed to act as checks and balances to the power of government so that the society progresses in the right direction. Theoretically speaking, pressure groups are an asset in a democratic society. They allow ordinary people and small groups to influence government policies in the right circumstances and does not degenerate of fall prey to greediness and self-indulgence. Some of the tools available to pressure groups are mass public demonstration, petitions and media campaigns. They can promote discussions and debates and mobilize public opinion on issues and perform an important role in educating citizens about the threats of such compromises. It is wondered how many have thought of the threats looming on us in the wake of the concretization of this seemingly electoral compromise but which, in effect, will be giving birth to a new form of despotism.

Dictatorship
For once, Meeah is right. A Labour-MMM alliance followed by a predictable landslide victory, probably a 60 score, would usher in a legal dictatorship. With the help of the MMM, Labour would finally achieve its goal of absolute power, leaving no room for an effective opposition in Parliament. Ramgoolam always wanted a three quarter majority to rule as he sees of fit. But he could reach the HOly grail of absolute power on his own. With the complicity of Berenger, now he will
