Lakshman Bheenick: “I trust that political parties will appoint the best Prime Minister possible”

Standard Bank, which originated in South Africa more than 150 years ago, started its operations in Mauritius in 2001. This Africa-centric bank absent from the retail sector is primarily an investment bank highly specialised in corporates. It is in sixth position in the banking sector, judging by the size of the balance sheet, and can still grow on the island, according to Lakshman Bheenick, the CEO. The bank has just posted two successive years of all-time high profits. However, earnings for its upcoming financial year will be impacted by the slowdown in Africa.

The global strategy of the group is to be the leader in financial services in, for and across Africa and Standard Bank Mauritius is brought in, for and across Africa at an investment banking level, the CEO pointed out. Its client base is one that is primarily going to Africa including Mauritian corporates. Since Standard Bank is present in 21 countries, it can help Mauritian companies: “We have the recipe for Africa and can share best practices,” said the bank’s CEO.

For Lakshman Bheenick, there is no space for traditional retail banking in Mauritius, but there is for new trends and products in this field, such as online banking brought out by new technologies “in this constantly evolving market”. For him, Mauritius is “the Singapore of Africa”. If Africa prospers, the island will grow. “So we should look at what Mauritius can achieve and what is within reach,” he suggested and highlighted several issues currently at stake in the country, namely politics and its influence on global business, the bank’s key activity.

Standard Bank Mauritius’ CEO Lakshman Bheenick makes the cover story of Business Magazine this week, an issue accompanied by supplement ‘Immobilier & Construction’ featuring on its cover an interview of Philippe de Beer, Director park Lane Properties, a paper on workspace available in Vivéa Business Park and Résidences de Chantenay designed for seniors.
